Long time since I've posted. Winter seemed to last forever, then continued flooding made it tough to find subjects. Lastly, the boost I thought I had in my internet connection was short-lived and just made it more frustrating than ever to participate here. For a variety of reasons, I'm moving. That has come with plenty of challenges too but one positive is that as of last week, I have a fiber-optic internet connection. What a difference it has made in being able to access and enjoy what you've all been up to!

I'm going back in my archives to last winter for this set. Over a couple days during a particularly cold snap in March, I happened to stumble upon this carp carcass washed up on the lake shore. Much to my delight the first time I saw it, a mink found it too and tore into it with a vengeance! Gulls pecking at it earlier really hadn't made a dent in it, but the mink wasted no time in getting its fill.

The next day it warmed up considerably. I hoped the mink might still be working it but shortly after I arrived in late-afternoon, a couple of crows came by and started salvaging what they could from it. From a natural history perspective, this was a fascinating couple days for me to document this carcass!

6. Very interesting behavior: they kept touching beaks as they worked the carcass.

Thanks so much, KD! Things are getting better. My new place is in the Finger Lakes of NY, not where everyone moves to get away from Winter but I think it will be much less challenging than where I've lived the last 15 years. And it's only 20 minutes from an airport...
