p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · my kit is missing something.....

I think I am missing something in my kit.. either a fast 35mm or a 28mm or 24mm... I can't decide.

I think I have it narrowed down the the 28/2 or a used 35/1.4 at about 1200.. Big difference in price I know. Also open to other options.

just wondering what you would do...

Mainly looking for something to give some different perspectives for portraits, maybe some low light night shots and and indoor low light. Right now the fastest lens I have is the 55/1.8

The Sony 28/2 is only about $350, used. That's a pretty decent lens, and I still have and use mine for low-light. Focus is accurate and rendering is good. Great value!

no. Can you be more specific. I should probably also state at this point I want an AF lens.

He's referring to the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art, which is AF. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1393491-REG/sigma_24mm_f_1_4_dg_hsm.html

$850 and pretty darn good optically, but it is quite big.

While not particularly wide, another vote for the CV 40/1.2, but that is not AF.

I have the 16-35/4.

I didn't see if this Sigma still uses the calibration dock. I bought one of the very first Sigma 35 Art lenses when I shot Nikon. It was flawless and never needed calibration. I also later got the 18-35 and the the 24-105 and they were out of calibration and I had a rough time using the dock. I want to avoid having to fine tune it, but it does look nice. Its probably about the same size as the Sony, right?

If you're not 100% sure what (ie. if) you need, then I'd go for the 28mm. It's plenty sharp, af isn't too shabby, and the rendering is pretty good. For the price it's hard to beat.

To be clear, it is objectively pretty soft wide open everywhere but the center. Though that may be fine for his use case. Center performance is good, seemingly better than the Batis 25. Rendering is okay but definitely not great. It has trouble with specular highlights as well as rendering at moderate distances (full body portraits, etc). The autofocus does seem accurate and fairly fast. The size is also quite nice. Something else to look out for is longitudinal chromatic aberration (color fringing). It will fringe like crazy and will need to be fixed in post. There's also a ton of distortion but fixing it in post isn't a big deal.

Haven't had my copy too long yet but those are my impressions. I did a ton of research before buying but what ultimately sold me was the fast aperture at that size, and especially the fact that it's the only 28mm for the system. Seems like it was a pretty good buy for $333.

You may want to wait until Sony announces the 24mm GM to see if that would fill your needs at your budget. I would expect it to have better autofocus than the 24mm Sigma and hopefully better bokeh. But it will likely also be large and more expensive.

The first thing I would do is find out if you'd rather shoot at 24 or 35. That's quite a big difference in focal length for your purposes. As stated above, 28mm is a nice middle ground if you don't really feel "at home" shooting at 24 or 35 (like me).

Only you can decide what's missing. Simple as that.
Look at a lot of photos from all the lenses/focal lengths that interest you and make a decision based on that. Follow your own preferences.

Buy or rent the 16-35 zoom until you know what FL you want. Only then can you consider whether you want a prime (or two, or three).

You have the 16-35/4. You must be able to decide what FL you want from that. Check your photos for most used FL.

Then buy the 35/1.4 or Voigtlander 40/1.2

My kit is always missing something too, no matter what I buy. It is a viscous cycle. 🤣

I hear you. I took a break of over 3 years. Went out and took my first portrait shots the other day. I was definitely out of sync

Why not invest in a workshop, trip, or some other experience-based purchase that would enrich you regardless of what's in your bag?

Profound post.

You will need to determine focal length and aperture. So, follow advice above. Rental is also a good option.
Once you know what focal length and aperture, there are a lot of video and written reviews. Lastly, questions not addressed can be answered here.
For me, I've come to the conclusion that quality fast lenses required the big bucks and can't be had on the cheap. Second, I use my Rokinon 35mm f/2.8 much more than my f/1.4 ZM. Loxia 85mm more than the GM.

I think this is the key. But also judging from your budget, it would be easy enough to do the Samyang 35/1.4 (which doesn't look that far off from the Zeiss from what I've seen on this forum) and the 28/2. Although if you are considering the 35/1.4 maybe if you like 28 more the Batis 25 would make more sense.
