My wife and I recently toured the Gaspe region of Quebec, making a day trip to Bonaventure Island, which is the home of one of the largest Gannet colonies on the planet (approximately 280,000 birds)… besides the amazing experience of witnessing so many birds in one place, the hiking and island scenery was a bonus. I must also add, Sigma's latest 100-400mm zoom was a delight to use....

Good pics David. Love gannet colonies. Frenetic and cacophonous would be good words for describing what you experience. And perhaps just a bit smelly too.

Both shots are really excellent and what I really like is the inclusion of the other birds in the large colony in the frames in a pleasing way. Especially in the second where the main subject is isolated from the rest but keeping the rest in the frame made for a way better shot than if you had just cropped to have the gannet against blue sky.

The first shot is very pleasing and presents nice isolation of the pair.

The second shot show proximity to the countless birds below, the 'blue water' is a nice bonus to isolate the subject.
I like both shots. As a thought #1 might present itself nicely in a vertical crop too?
