p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Does my 1DS MkIII have issues??

I posted a while back about how when viewing an image on the rear LCD display that when you zoom in it is fine but as soon as you try and zoom out the image disappears, no big deal I don't use the rear LCD display when out shooting.

How ever today I pulled it out and whilst it was turned on with a body cap attached to the front I pressed the Quick Control dial Set button and it activated the shutter but it locked it up it didn't return to its normal position, to get it to return to its normal position I had to turn the camera off.

When it the set button is pressed and it activates the shutter, on the rear LCD display it shows a black screen with shutter and F stop info as if you were looking at an image you have taken

The firmware is 1.2.0

should I send it off to Canon

I've owned a lot of 1 series cameras but none have ever done this??

OK so I just cleared all camera settings and it now doesn't activate the shutter from the set button but the image being viewed still disappears when you zoom out??

I'll reset all camera settings back to factory settings, see what that does?

The set button situation sounds like the camera was set to activate live view with that button. IIRC, back when I had the 1DIII, it was how I activated that feature.

Not sure why the image disappears as you zoom out. It shouldn't. If the camera otherwise works OK, I'd suggest it's a 'quirk' you'll have to live with because it's doubtful that camera is still serviced by Canon.

I love my 1Ds3 as well as my older 1Ds2. There's just something special about those images they produce.

I agree, I have a NUC pc setup to display 20,000 or so 1DSIII TIF images on my 83 inch UHD TV.

Might be worth changing the backup battery.

Yes, the aged do occasionally get confused and need a hard reboot My 1DsIII is the best camera I have ever owned or used.

I rebooted my camera two years ago and all functions returned to normal THEN I purchesed the new 85L IS and the camera got flaky. The focus points would not respond to the joystick and I could not zoom in on the screen.

I sent it to Toshio and he could not find any problems with the circuitry, THEN he discovered the Depth of Field Preview Button was stuck in and after cleaning it my 1DsIII was back to normal.

That was the first time in 10 years I used the DOFPB.

There's something about the 1Ds3 RAW files that I like more than any other dslr I've used (I haven't used a 5D4 or the 5DSR). Somehow more natural, less digital

You might try updating the firmware. Current firmware is 1.2.3

There are instructions provided on a pdf file with every firmware update but basically:

Download the firmware update
Unzip the files onto your pc/mac
Put the .fir upgrade file onto an otherwise empty memory card ensuring it is in the root directory (i.e. not in a sub directory of any kind)
Take the lens off, ensure the camera battery is full
Switch camera on and migrate to the firmware menu item and choose update
Don't touch the camera until it's finished.
Drop the battery out for 30 seconds.
Done

If you don't replace the backup battery, you are wasting your time.

YES!!! There is a 20mm ish Lithium battery in the top of the battery compartment which will require a small Philips head screwdriver.

Don't drop the screw

Yes, that resets the camera but it's the small coin battery that may need replacing.
It's in the manual

A firmware update is not necessary to reboot the 1DsIII. If my jet had the range I would have been there already
