p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Arch Bend on the John Day River

I was hoping you guys could help me out a little. I am trying to track down this specific location on the John Day River. The spot is know as Arch bend and from what I can tell it is located in cottonwood Canyon. Any information on this would be a huge help out since I am trying to plan a trip out there in about a week. Here is a photo found on google of the location I am trying to get to. THIS IS NOT MY PHOTO, image credit goes to David Jenson. The artical i found that led me to this site is here -> https://www.pdxmonthly.com/articles/2013/9/25/cottonwood-canyon-open-september-2013

If I had to guess from a good google maps sleuthing, I'd say first river vista along Starvation Lane looking east/southeast at the first upriver bend from the Lone Tree Campground. The fact that an assignment photographer for the Portland Monthly took the shot you reference, would argue for something relatively easy to reach as time is usually of the essence.

Also, it doesn't appear that the new park trails ascend from the river at any points.

Of course, it could also be a drone shot but from looking at David Jensen's IMPRESSIVE Oregon landscape photography website, he isn't airborne yet.

Good luck and be sure to let me know if this was a good guess.

I think you have to cross private property to get to this vantage, but not sure. A buddy and myself went here when this first became a state park and drove down some of the roads - all were farms.

You don't have to cross private property if you come from the river
