p.1 #1 · Kolari UT Mod portrait distance or bokeh examples?
I’ve seen a lot of lens tested at infinity with the Kolari Ultrathin, but very few that show the changes in lens character/bokeh at closer focus distances.
With the Batis 40mm f/2 on the horizon I’m especially interested in how the Kolari UT would affect my M-Rokkor 40mm f/2. Love that lens, but at f/2 the smearing is too much for anything other than centered subjects in portraits. Anyone have examples?
Same with my Summilux 50mm Pre-asph. I’m trying to decide how much of the wide open field “smudge” is the just the lens and how much is the sensor stack. I know that this lens is designed with the rear element closer to the sensor than most 50mm lenses.
bokeh is definitely improved on lenses that have outward field curvature with the UT mod.

I'd be really interested to see how an a7S with UT mod and AA filter removed would perform. I'm still considering it, but I read the reviews from Lensrentals that didn't show too much improvement of the color shift / corner smearing issues with WA M mount lenses. That would have been my main goal in getting it done.

Just an FYI for those not following the 'Monochrome emount' thread, but genji has been in contact with Kolari Vision and "they are working on a monochrome and color version of a new thin filter option, which would be thinner than the UT with better color accuracy." - from https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1538426/5#14435181

So it may pay to wait a bit
Nice! Really good to know. Thanks for the heads up!

I don't recall any sensor problems with my 'lux M 50 v2, and I use a stock A7ii. Do you have any sample images?

I've removed the content of this post since I've found out the mod in my A7ii was bad. The focus plane was tilted and I believe it was because of a very small dust particle between the UT glass and the sensor.
I did the modding in Europe, it was a bad idea ! but customs from USA to Europe makes it very expensive to send the camera to Kolari. I think I'll stay with my M10 for a while.

Hi, I've been doing lots of tests since I've left Leica (3 years using M9 and M10) to be sure what are going to be the consequences.... focusing at short distances and infinity. Today I've made this test to post it here...
Focus distance was about 5 meters. In the center of the image (pinecone).
This is the general view (taken with the 50mm):
The test is with the Sony A7II Kolari UT (converted in Europe) and the stock Sony A7RIII. I have converted to JPG and down sampled to 24MP the files from the A7RIII with Lightroom defaults to match the A7II resolution.
My A7II UT has about 0.4mm total sensor stack.
Here is the upper right corner with Summilux 50mm ASPH wide open (stock left, Kolari right):
My conclusion is that if you do portraits just forget about Leica cameras or modding your Sony, there is no practical difference between those cameras. I had the same conclusion when I tested stock Sony vs Leica M10. Also just to mention it... performance in the corners at infinite is even better in the Kolari sony than in the leica body. ...Show more →
I find your conclusion interesting. I like the bokeh from the Kolari modified camera a lot better and I came to that conclusion before looking at which was which. Bokeh is of course subjective and that is just my view, but from these samples I would come to the opposite conclusion that you have.
