Uluru is a magic place. An enormous monolithic rock weathered into marvellous curves, it dominates the landscape for miles around. It's sacred to the Aboriginals and has become a part of the psyche of the Aboriginal groups who have inhabited the area for thousands of years.
I had to look up how it was formed. In a nutshell, over time, titanic geographic forces squished the rock together. Millions of years ago, it was covered by an inland sea that eventually disappeared. The surrounding landscape weathered and eroded faster then the rock that Uluru is composed of, leaving us with a giant rock in the middle of nowhere. I could be wrong but I recall reading the the rocks in the area are up to 800 million years old.
At sunset, it's a beautiful spectacle to watch the rock change colour from a glowing red to a muted rust. I have put together a sequence of images trying to capture this.
