Rich, these are gorgeous loon images that you took in Maine! Great job!
I also love that they feel comfortable with people around them, as long as it is quiet. Yes, I have found the same things you found to be true. If I am near them already, they trust me enough to leave the baby there, while they go off for several minutes.
But, loons have a dark side. At my place, this year's baby was killed by an intruding male loon. There are more loons that want to breed, than there is quality nesting habitat. This little one that was killed, was absolutely thrilled with life. But it got to live just three days. It broke my heart and I am not over it.
I also find it odd that they leave the chick alone, because of the Bald Eagles that occasionally fly over. In 2016 the chick disappeared for two days and I thought the eagles got it too. Nope. The well-developed chick just decided to go off on its own. The parents did not know where it was either. In October, that chick successfully got off the lake and headed to the ocean. They are fascinating creatures to watch and photograph.
Congratulations on your gorgeous loon images!
Robert
