How about a poster designating his thread with one of these:

1) I just want to share - this is for your enjoyment (don't want critique)
2) I want to learn - how would you grade this photo?
3) What do you think? - general, want some feedback, no constraints

a circle with a digit identifying what the poster is looking for.. hence more right responses, everybody's happy

In 60 days this thread got over 10,000 views, so people are here, they are interested, just some things need to be tuned to make things better. We like some postings, others are not our style.
Favorite posters setting? "Favorite this poster" so that the postings stand out in the thread list?
Filter to only (or avoid) certain posters to have a personalized (for the viewer) list, so you see more of what you want and less of what you don't?

There must have been threads lost in time which you'd enjoy seeing, but are a month+ old so you'd have to go to page 20. Filter instead, so it's on page 1 or 2.

You can see the posts of someone you like, but you see 100+ postings of thread start, and consecutive comments on the same thread, comments on others' threads...... A filter for Started Threads would be nice. With the picture as a thumbnail.

What Robert said. I especially like the first suggestion. I think it would be well received, if doable.

I don't think so. In fact I disagree pretty much entirely. A critique should help the photographer understand what others see. It should help the photographer see what worked and more importantly what did not work.

If your work strikes others as being over cooked, don't blame the intentions of the person making the critique. Don't pretend you do not understand. It might mean the processing over pumped up with saturation, contrast, local contrast enhancements, dodging/burning. HDR, or a variety of more sophisticated technqiues. The person making the critique can rarely tell what was done in the processing, but they

I agree with my quote (obviously, it is mine!) The overall attitude and spirit of the critiquer has a ton to play into how well a person can digest the critique. When people just say "overcooked" and say nothing else, it rarely does anything to actually help the photographer. Applying some tact (and just general personability) when laying out some clear specifics to help and encourage the person getting the critique is a great idea in my book.

So, what is "overcooked?" Is the saturation too high for your personal taste? Is the global contrast too strong? Does the image look like it has too much highlight glow? Locally? Globally? Is the sharpening too strong? If so, where is the over sharpness showing itself? These are the kind of specifics that really help people.

I remember when a great photographer started the hidden Facebook Page "Area 51" and I got invited to join. It was awesome and humbling. 51 members that I totally respected their work (nearly all my favorite photographers at the time). We all knew we were trying to help each other up our game. People felt so comfortable having their work critiqued there, often people would say "please critique the heck out of this!" There was a spirit of comradery. I do not remember a single critique there where I felt someone was just being negative. I know quite a few people who have left this forum over the years because of the opposite attitude sometimes rearing its head. So, again, the attitude and spirit of the critiquer is very important in my book.

I like your 1,2,3 designation. But I don't agree with filtering for people you like. That's how these little cliques start. You just stick to your 20 FM friends and pat each other on the back. The new girl never gets her posts looked at. 400 views and all she gets is a "thanks for sharing."

I do wish that there are thumbnails. One glance and I can see what grabs my interest. Instead, I'm reading the titles and deciding if I want to see another Yosemite or Iceland picture. That's time consuming and I might overlook something great. And I also don't feel like coming up with a pretentious title just to sound interesting. But if I just say "Eiffel Tower at Night," it's not exactly exciting.

If you want critiques, post to the critiques forum.
If you just want to show your work, post to this forum.
No need for "designations."
