Well Sharon what would you like to here about the images you post...just praise or honest feedback where maybe cropping 1/3 of your image might just make it stronger. You call this feedback BS because you don't agree with it?

Chez, you missed my point entirely and got very hostile to boot. What I was talking about is that there is no set of rules for making a photograph that can't/shouldn't be broken and it is the artist's choice. If you are making choices as an artist/photographer those are your choices to make and someone can either like it or not, buy it or not, but it isn't right or wrong to choose to photograph a certain way. That is what art is about. When you try to standardize it to conform to certain "rules" you force a cookie cutter approach to photography. My photographs aren't extreme by any means but the choices I make are deliberate and while your advice might make my photographs stronger to you, they aren't your photographs. When we all photograph the same things, the same way, it gets pretty boring and stifles creativity. Like I said, if you find it helpful, great. The whole point of this thread was why aren't people posting as much and I was giving my reason why and frankly, you proved my point.

Well I agree with you that every photographer chooses their own compositions...but I disagree that having other photographers give you ideas that might make your image stronger is wrong. Or are you saying you don't need improvements.

Personally I love the idea of other talented fellow photographers giving me their take on an image...I learn and grow from this. I don't need to always take their advice but hearing feedback from multiple views only benefits me.

Why is it you are so against this?

Why are you taking this so personally? I was giving my reason for not posting. And you are insulting me. Not sure why you think that is cool.

I don't think so and here is why. A great many photographers profess that they are open to critique, suggestions, negative comments, whatever you want to call it. Then in practice that changes dramatically.

Look at Mark M's comments. He claims to be all for comments and critique, BUT..

The comments need to be "constructive" whatever that means and only he will be the judge of that.

The comments need to be done respectfully. Again, that is subject to interpretation and you can bet what the critiquer thinks is ok will not always be well received. Also it seems that negative criticism needs to be preceded by positive comments. Again that is subject to interpretation.

Then he mentions overprocessed as an example of poor criticism that bothered him. It seems to me that overprocessed is a pretty clear description of a common issue. I do not see where someone should explain that and be specific. It is often not clear what a photographer does with processing. A great many pump up the saturation, contrast and sharpening to surreal levels. Some use HDR or other dynamic range enhancements. Some apply a heavy dose of local contrast enhancement often through the use of Topaz or other plugins. The final result can be overprocessed without any clear indication of what was done.

I don't mean to pick on Mark but he was clear in his expectations. Most other people who post are not clear as to what they consider reasonable. Others want no comments at all.

I’m not insulting you...at least that’s not my desire. I’m just truly wanting to understand why someone does not want constructive input on their work? Is the purpose of posting just to show off their work? If so, what feedback would you be looking for, if any?

For those that want critiques (or feel the need to give critiques), just go to critiques forum and stop trying to impose your will on the presentation forums. What’s so hard about that?

One reason is most talented landscape photographers hang out in the landscape forum. I much more appreciate feedback from those that practice the same type of photography as I do.

I'm sorry I responded to this thread now. When I started here, there was a group of photographers posting who loved photography and we all posted as a way of sharing that experience with each other. People posted a variety of images using a variety of styles. It was the community that was enjoyable for me. I didn't pose to get praise for my work but to share the experience. This was back when Scary Fox and Barry Hamilton and many others that I enjoyed were here. Criticism was offered at times but it was done with a real feel for the other person's style and intent. Not some blanket advice but more personal.

I don't know how to explain it any better than that.

some folks no longer post or left FM because of favoritism, bias, and censorship by the moderators as well.

To those though that think there should be no feedback, that's ridiculous. This board is a community. It's not 500px where no one says anything and pictures rise and fall. People talk, and actually many become friends and shoot together. So unlike nameless, faceless people on the internet. People actually meet here and become friends (or enemies). That's why Fred Miranda is unique.

You may not agree with what someone says, or it makes you mad, or you pout... But at least someone is recognizing you. Harden up and go with the flow. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Liked the old days better. No pop up ads and people were more friendly. A lot of people now using FM to merchandise their products or services under the auspices of showing their work. Too many people leading off with "while I was with some clients in . . ." or "I hiked ten miles through the snow with 50 pounds of gear, risked life and limb to get this shot . . . here are the technical details . . . for information on my next workshop . . . " Get the picture?

There was an image posted a few days ago which had promise but had some major issues with it ( from my point of view ). I hesitated to comment on the image and last checked it had one comment..."nice capture".

Now I'm wondering if we are really doing this person any good:

1. He / she only had one reply to his post...most likely we won't see that person again.
2. He / she could have used some feedback to help build his skill set...but got nothing.
3. He / she will most likely never post in the critique board as that seems pretty scary for a beginner.

Now did we collectively do this poster any good here? One "nice image" comment...will that encourage that member to post more, will it show them how to improve, will it show them how to experiment, how to view the image from different eyes...how to learn to see?

Regretfully...no, we as a community did not help this one member a bit by being quite.

I think this is a trend we are seeing with ALL photography websites. The younger generation doesn't care what we old farts are doing with photography. The IG crowd (and they are the majority!) must have instant gratification and it is mostly superficial and fleeting. They rapidly move on to the next "big" thing.
Those of us who actually practice the art of photography are fewer and fewer. I think the ethics of the Internet pretty much suck and there are so many posuers masquerading as "experts" it makes me sick to my stomach.
Bottom line - I still enjoy my photography but mostly for my own satisfaction and sharing with a few close friends who also happen to be photographers.

I still don't understand how in a presentation forum (and assuming the poster didn't ask for C&C), why do these self appointed experts just assume that their opinion is worth anything? They seem to think that they know better than every one else - that they can "improve" the poster's skills. What a crock....pontification does not equal skill.

The OP can always choose to accept or ignore whatever feedback they receive. I like getting feedback from anyone, regardless of their skill level or even if they aren't a photographer. I like to know what reaches people and what doesn't. I like getting ideas for other paths I can take - even if I choose not to take them. I share to elicit a response.

When I post here, my objective is to share my work and hopefully get some feedback on whether other viewers like or dislike the image. If I'm lucky they let me know why. My most recent post on this forum was sometime back and received one comment. In fact most of my posts here get only one or two comments. I understand that it can be demotivating to get little to no feedback on a post. And it is a shame to not get some discussion on ones images in a forum like this but the reality is that most of us are super busy and all of us are bombarded by incredible imagery all day via the media.

Like another poster above I will comment on an image if it touches me in some way or if I can see ways that would improve it in my eyes and they have asked for feedback.

Who here is claiming being an expert at anything? You don't have to be an expert to have an opinion on how an image can be improved. My wife always critiques my images and I really get a lot from her point of view. She shoots snaps with her iPad to post onto Facebook...far from an expert.

Why is it people are so uptight about getting their images reviewed by others.
