p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lake District trip in mid-September

Asked for some tips over in the Trip Location Advice forum and got 0 responses. I have 2 weeks on the calendar for a roadtrip of England. I had planned to fly into Glasgow, rent a car, and then head straight to the Lake District for 1 week. Then over to Whitby/Staithes for 2-3 nights, then up the Northumberland coast for castle and coastal photography for the remainder of the 2 week trip. Then fly home out of Glasgow. Depart the states the evening of Sept 13th and return on Sept 29th.

Have been doing a bit of research, but wanted to ask for must see places in that area on here.

Mostly interested in walks, photography, and a few nice pubs for a pint or three. Not into camping and I will need a place to wash clothes a few times. So any advice on must photo places, and great places to stay and eat would be absolutely appreciated. This will be a solo trip.

My wife and I are hiking the Cumbria Way next year and I've done a little research. Since we'll be without a car it is a bit limited, but here are some, very limited, suggestions:
Ulverston-Home of Stan Laurel!
Coniston-believe they have a brewery there
Derwentwater seems to be a popular place for lakescapes. Places to get up above the lake and the city of Keswick or along the 8 mile hike around the lake.
This sounded interesting. Near Little Langdale: http://www.visitcumbria.com/amb/cathedral-cave/

Hope that helps a little.

Dave

Thanks! I'm looking at Keswick as a starting out, maybe 4 nights there, and then considering Coniston now that you mention it as another destination for maybe another 2 nights.

The hike sounds fun. Primitive camping?

Keswick/Derwentwater are very nice. Style is Victorian summer homes and lake scenes.

I'd recommend checking out Ulswater and Pooley Bridge. much more mountain scenic. There are day hikes to the top of the surrounding mountains.

If you are interested in history, check out Whitehaven on the coast, and Hadrian's Wall runs just north of Carlisle. Pay attention to the old farm buildings as you drive around...the region from Carlisle down to Penrith were the borderlands. Many of them still show the defensive arrow ports high up on the walls under the eaves.

Thanks for the tips! The Pooley Bridge area was in the cards for some photo opps for sure, but I might just make that a destination now. And Whitehaven might just be a nice side trip to get over to the coast for a bit.

Definitely up for Hadrian's Wall too.

Have been to the UK 6 times now, have never driven there. I have a friend over there who drove twice when I was in the countryside and the rest of my visits have been where I did not need a car. This will be a true adventure then.

Hiking from B&B to B&B from Ulverston to Carlisle. Then up to Glencoe and Skye for a while. The second half is more of the photo trip.

That actually sounds pretty fun!

I went to Glencoe and Skye back in May of 2013, rained and rained and rained. Will go back one day. Have a work trip to Scotland on the books for May, so, possibly then.

These were the videos that got my attention on Cathedral Cavern. That and Google Earth showed them close to the Cumbria Way path.

Whitby, Staithes, Runswick Bay and Saltwick Bay for the Yorkshire east coast, don’t forget the dales for rolling hills, dry stone walls and old farm buildings. For cityscapes, the Newcastle riverside at night gives loads of opportunities. Further north, Bamburgh Castle, Alnwick, Alnmouth, Druridge Bay and Dunstanburgh Castle are all good locations plus Lindisfarne on Holy Island, check tides as the causeway gets covered at high tide. Only 30 miles north is Berwick on Tweedjust on the English side of the border with Scotland.
Hope you have a great trip. There are loads of cheap B&B’s everywhere, try Booking

Is there a reason for flying into Glasgow? You would be a lot closer going to Manchester.

None other than a direct flight from Philadelphia. Just wanted to reduce my time in airports. I’ll consider a Manchester arrival. Will be my 1st time driving there so I hope I do well.
