Seems like they look better if you click on them...I don't know what the best way to resize things for this forum is yet.

These are from my trip to South America in June-July 2015. For a four week trip we only had two days in Torres del Paine--traveling with two others whose priority #1 was not photography, alas. The first day there was not a cloud in the sky. The second day was much better, despite getting up at something like 5 a.m. for the two hour drive in the dark from Puerto Natales, hoping there wasn't any ice on the roads. Summer up here = winter down there. But, that did mean the sunrise lasted a lonnnng time, and the sun stayed low all day, yielding some pretty great light. I have some sunrise shots, but my compositions didn't pan out like I wanted. I actually like these mid-morning photographs much better. Comments and opinions welcome. Enjoy!

1. Obligatory Torres Del Paine Shot (I like the water spots, so there.)

2. Salto Grande Waterfall a hundred yards down stream

Wow, I like your pics a lot, specially nr 1. Your pictures of waterfalls look like waterfalls because you didn't shoot with the camera open for 40 " like a lot of people do. In your pictures one can see the water action. If you open your camera to long, instead of water action, one would see smooth flowing. I like the action, the turbulent power of the waterfalls.

First shot evokes raw power. So dramatic.

Thank you so much for your kind words, and I appreciate your thoughts. I agree, the scene often calls for a shorter shutter speed. In my opinion, these locations are such scenes. The calmness evoked by smoothed out water would be totally incongruent with the nature of the scene--getting blasted in the face by relentless bitter wind, and the roar of the water. These were 1/8" and 1/15" respectively. Long enough to convey some motion, short enough to preserve the sense of energy.

Thank you, I appreciate it a lot! #1 ended up being my favorite also. And thank you for sharing your thoughts. I debated about the water spots with myself. I actually played around with some ways of getting rid of them in Lightroom. I found that if you use a soft edge adjustment brush approximating the size of the spot, you can play with the clarity, exposure, and contrast settings on the brush and do a pretty good job of disguising the spots. In the end though, I felt that the water spots contribute to the sense of getting pelted in the face by wind-driven spray, so I left them in. The wind is truly abusive in Torres del Paine! But I can understand the impulse to correct photographic imperfections as well, which is usually my impulse.

Thank you, that's exactly what I hoped to convey, as that is what I felt standing at the scene. I'm glad you think it came across successfully

Thanks all for looking
