I recently returned from Maui having brought a scaled down kit. I wanted to avoid worry about my gear in the car when surfing and windsurfing.

My normal everyday kit is 5dsr/16-35f4/35-70leica/100-400v2

For the Maui trip I used the Sony a6000, 24mm native sony/zeiss, 16-35f4 canon, 200f2.8 canon, 1.4x extender.

The sony performed decent for landscapes, but manual focus was killing me for the birds and wildlife. My sony/canon adapter is a bit finicky, loses it's connection to the camera from time to time. Also it's an AF adapter but AF is a joke on it, happy to just control the aperture.

What I would have done differently and still been scaled down: I should have brought my wife's rebel to use with the 200 and 1.4x for the bird photos.

I have an android s6, and did a few shots using it, mostly for a quick send to friends.

I believe when we bring our cameras and decide to take pictures, our hope is to reliably capture something our eye sees and if the photo is particularly important/good, produce some kind of print or "something".

Telling users that their iphone prints with regularity are going to look good printed big is simply wasting their time and bragging.

Everyone’s standards are different. Mine may be lower than some but I got some great shots out of my phone in this experiment.

I also think that there could be another reason why people are disappointed with their phone cam prints at your lab. The way I see most phone cam users shoot, they tend to just point quickly and snap. Then that is what they get: just snaps. Also, way over 99% of phone cam photos are shot in JPEG, in auto metering mode, framed carelessly, will contain blown highlights or dark shadows, horizons that are not level, distortions, flare if they forget to use their hands as lens hoods, and so on. Also, many tend to “tap” too firmly so the image gets blurred.

And just FTR I don’t think there is anything wrong with snaps. Snaps can be captured easily and quickly nowadays with the modern phones and they can be enjoyed immensely when shared between friends. Nothing wrong with that. But you get what you pay for. If you pay more attention, you will get better photos. With a “snap” approach to photography a dSLR can do only so much.

I found that If one thinks ahead while shooting, considering the camera’s capabilities and shortcomings, and spends time in post processing, snaps can be turned into photographs that are worth printing and no one will ever wonder if they were shot by a dSLR or a phone. So yes, I believe you can reliably capture what the eye sees as long as you know what you are doing.

Ralph, I see you are from the Netherlands, we stopped in Amsterdam on the way. Some of these I've posted before.

Thanks Jeff, nice set. Looks like that camera can in fact deliver good results in the hands of a capable photographer.

Thanks for the kind words

And thinking back to your crock pic reminds me how many people I saw on safari take their phone and digitally expand the picture to equal what I was seeing with my 100-400. Expanding 8 MP at 28 mm? How many pixels per duck would that be?
Know your gear and use it within reason.

I have gone the route of rx100 4. there was still too much of drop off from my sony a6300, and not much in terms of space savings, when paired with the 16-50 lens. I also missed the responsiveness and ease of use. to each their own.
I do not shoot wildlife on vacation/hollidays, and have never carried the 70-200 2.8 or 100-400L on vacation. I suppose if I were going to Safari I would. I have taken the 70-300L on landscape trips.

+1 to the RX100 4.
I had the V1, but I realized I really like the option of going to 24mm, and more exposure control in manual mode. Somehow I got lucky and downloaded a few of my playmemory apps onto it as well. It's a great little camera. I put a stick on filter mount from ebay and discovered an old polarizer I can use with it.

Here are a couple new cameras coming out that seem to be great for travel when you don't want to take out your regular outfit.

Thanks for all your comments. Each of us have our own context and requirements. So let me rephrase the reason for starting this topic.

I wanted to have a way of speeding up the photographing process. Also, I considered leaving some gear at home to reduce weight.

When we go hiking on family vacations, I am the only photographer in the family so on previous trips everybody always had to wait for me to take off my backpack, take out the gear, change lenses, fiddle with filters and then stow everything back in the backpack. This leads to some tension.

Please note that
...Show more

so the OP will still bring the DSLR and big lens for most trips and is hoping someone will invent a "decent" P&S
or a better cell phone will be the future P&S
.
maybe all the talk and introduction of smaller mirrorless cameras is just ... hype.

24-720mm zoom range. Wow. I think I'd get by with 24-120 or even 24-70. However, I would miss having nothing wider than 24mm. I would love to have 16mm eq. FL. Are there any front lens adapters to widen things?

I notice that I am getting quite enthusiastic about my next P&S, although I can't stand the name because I intend to use it just like a dSLR, with careful composition and minding the exposure.

I rarely bring my dSLR to my day job because well I have my phone with me always, right? And a phone can shoot decent images nowadays. But my guess is that the IQ of such a high end P&S is closer to the IQ of a high end dSLR than to a phone camera, even when I squeeze every drop of quality out of my iPhone using RAW shooting and manual settings. So I may end up tossing the P&S in my work backpack and keep it there permanently in case a photo opportunity pops up.

I think that for the next couple of years a RX100 IV will be quite OK. I also looked at waterproof cameras but they seem like toys compared to the RX100 when it comes to IQ.

Just one thing: how fast does a RX100 start up? I have an old Sony DSC-V1 that I bought 15 years ago. When I turn it on, it will take 5 odd seconds to do it's open sesame trick. Hopefully the new units open up fast....

I doubt anything with a 24-720 ff equivalent zoom has a large sensor. Looks more compact, compared to the ones that go to 1200 or 2000mm.

The HX95 and HX99 1/2.3" sensor size is way too small for me; it's only 7.8mm wide. I'll stick with my Panasonic LX100 for light travel, with its excellent 24-75mm equiv. f/1.7 - 2.8 lens, and its M43-sized sensor; 17.3mm wide. Maybe get the LX100 II, after it's been out for a while.

I'll wait to see what the image quality is like coming out of the system. For serious stuff I will always use my full frame system...but for times when I just don't want to carry it ( bike rides, x-country skiing ) where right now I use an X100...this camera might be very handy.

For travel...it's always my Sony full frame kit.

I've been using my LX100 instead of my X100S for a couple of years. Instead of my RX100, too.

For travel, it varies from the LX100 to 20 kg+, depending.

Thank you all for your help and advice. Previously I always thought lowly of compact cameras because I was used to my dSLR kit and I lugged it all over the world. Now after my own experiment I changed my mind about it. Got an extra contender, the Panasonic, thanks to Jim.

I will study the compacts further outside this topic as to not pollute it with a compact camera decision process.

Great stuff. Great forum. Great members. Thanks.

I feel compelled to point out that the G series have always been quite DSLR like in their handling. This is especially true of the G5X and G1X3 with their EVFs but also in the similar layout of the EVF-less G7X2. Locking top mode dial, front dial, configurable rear dial. Configurable C1 and C2 mode positions like the 5Ds and 80D. Familiar Canon menus obviously. No joy stick to move the focus point like the 5Ds but the lower half of the touch screen can position the focus point with a finger or thumb while holding the camera up to your eye. I've configured video record button to let me adjust ISO with the front dial while in stills mode. It really handles quite similarly to my 5D# and 80D. There is a ring around the lens that can be configured for manual focus or zoom control. 2 axis level and live histogram in the viewfinder and top exposure compensation dial.

The G5X and G7X use the 20 MP Sony 1" sensor.
