I like my RX100 v1, but the shadows in a high dynamic range look just so-so. If I want great IQ and still need something small and light, I take my A7r v1 with the kit mid range zoom. The A7r v1 still takes great images and has the smooth reflections app. I barely notice it on my shoulder.

When I visited Korea/Japan last year I wasn’t after birds and brought a smaller kit...but still brought 100-400II on the 5DSR. Also 16-35/4 and a small Fuji mirrorless with just a 23/1.4 and 18-55...I also brought my phone of course.

I used my iPhone as my only camera for all hikes and a few other times as we were traveling with Korean friends. I used my Fuji one time on a nighttime food tour for the low light. I made use of my 5DSR because I’d brought it along but really my phone would have served.

However, when I finally found a Mandarin duck couple I was sure glad I had the 5DSR/100-400/1.4 for what may end up being a once in a lifetime species for me.

I have used the phone at times on a trip, but while it is excellent for convenience, and does some things really great, I don't know that I'd call it fulfilling.

Although for snow skiing it is a dream. I can carry it all day, and keep it in my pocket, in case it gets good or I want to photograph something.

I wouldn’t want to carry the 100-400. But I shoot aps, so I take a 55-250, very lightweight, for the fl.

Yeah, a large sensor zoom compact like the Sony RX100 Mark.* is a good idea, sometimes I think I should get one myself. The Panasonic LX100 (which may have been superseded by a newer model by now, but I remember being intrigued by one back in the day) also looks like a mighty fine camera, with its 4/3 sensor and bright zoom lens.

There are so many ways to have a conversation about the OP's topic, it's hard to even start.

My rule of thumb is the more exotic the location (and this is all relative) the more important it is to bring the DSLR. If I'm traveling within the states for a weekend only or 1 night, I won't even bother bringing anything and just bring the phone.

Travel for me is usually a big production - 7-14 days, flying international, visiting multiple destinations - so it would be difficult for me to return to a lot of these places, meaning I have this one chance to capture the photo I want.

If traveling with your rig is an issue for you, then maybe the problem is just the size and amount of your gear. I don't know to what extent the tension caused is between you, your wife, and kids, but if its just small bickering, it's not that big a deal right? however, if you're getting into shouting matches, then maybe you should carry just 1 lens so you won't be fumbling with your gear. or as others have said, maybe plan sometime to walk around alone to do your thing and some other time to explore strictly with them.

the other side is maybe you don't care to take photos in Australia or not excited about the destination. if that's true, then take the phone and hang with the family. if you're not excited about your destination, your photos probably won't be too exciting.

Thanks! Today I did a test myself between iPhone and 5D4 with 24-70/4IS. The iPhone image was taken with Halide, RAW enabled.
I loaded both shots on my 30" Apple Cinema Display (in Lightroom) and they both looked very good, not much between them in fit view. Of course the 5D4 image was better crop able and this was around noon on a sunny day so overcast / darker conditions or even dusk/dawn and the 5D4 will win hands down. Still for many landscape snaps in the native iPhone range I mean really that phone camera has developed to a level where it takes stunning RAW images.

So if we do this test together with the family there will only be notable differences with the wildlife shots that I want to shoot with the 100-400/1.4x. For the rest my family couldn't care less.

Do a little 'post processing' on the iphone images, if you know what I mean!

How about take the camera and 100-400 but just use them on a couple of select days and use the phone the rest of the time?

Pick the days that you think would work the best.

There's nothing wrong with your thinking. You'll have plenty of opportunities to photograph things in your life, but you'll only have one family. That's always what I always tell myself, at least.

I usually start off my trips with all my gear, a one series body plus a couple of lenses. And usually by the third or fourth day I switch over the my phone because I’m tired of carrying it all. Lol. Even my padded backpack to carry it all gets old. My next trip I’m really thinking about just buying a little Rebel to take with me.

I was just on vacation in Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado and Arizona. I did have my Canon 50d, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8IS It's the only lens' I have. I ended up using the iPhone more. I don't mind editing on my iPad later. Now keep in mind that I'm not really printing much of what I take. Although one of the pano's I took with the iPhone I'm gonna print of the cliff dwellings. I did use the Canon too, but most of the time it was snaps of the kids and wife and the iPhone was easier, and we are more then happy with the images. I only have the 6S+ and I'm pretty sure the image quality is better with the 8 that you have. Whatever you decided have a great vacation!

The only time I ever use my phone for pics is when I need to document something like the other day I took apart most of my printer to change a belt...I took photos of the steps so I could easily put it back together...or when I'm fixing something and need an odd part...snap and off to the hardware store.

The reason why I bought thousands of dollars worth of camera gear is to take photos and what a better place and time to take photos when traveling. No way would I travel without my camera gear.

You need to decide if it is a family vacation or a photo vacation then plan accordingly. If it is a hybrid, make sure everyone else understands. I've done it both ways and you will experience the trip more and remember it better if you leave the gear at home. (But you won't have nice images for later...)

simple: No.

Been there done that. while I can create images... it is the seeing not the tool.

I prefer the ability to adjust controls as the camera is in operation. Meaning some dials/switches.

This coming from a wedding shooter.

Thanks! Nice to see opposite preferences and their arguments. The dSLR advocates say they haven't spent lots of money (and time) to leave the kit at home, some phone enthusiasts say it can be more relaxed having just a phone.

Yes it's family mostly and I am the only one interested in capturing high quality imagery, the wife and kids just take snaps. I enjoy being able to catch some distant and shy wildlife but it takes some time to fetch the camera and wait for a pose or even an appearance. I used to find myself reaching for my camera the very moment I saw something interesting, as I knew the rest of the family would stand and watch just a while and if I take time to have a "family moment" first, I will be lingering on when they want to move on.
I suppose it comes down to how much I will use the camera. If I stop for every occasion my travel companions will get bored. But somehow I can't see myself leaving everything at home, not the least because I bought part of my kit for travels (though knowing it will always be some struggle). Maybe this is going to be a hybrid trip.
The girls like the photographs I show them after a trip and my wife does too, but if it were up to her we would bring only a P&S or phone. We have a dozen of travel photos hanging on the wall in our home. Some of those I could have shot with a current HQ phone camera, some not.

I hear some of you recognise the situation.

The plan is now to bring at least a WA and the 100-400 and blend phone and dSLR images in the series. Try to be selective but to have the kit available for those great opportunities I want to enjoy.

I travel quite a bit with work and usually take a DSLR on most trips. There are a few places I visit often that I only rely on my phone (New Orleans and Baton Rouge). Some of my favorite images this year have been taken with my phone including one that was a picture of my 5dii on a tripod on a rocky shore near LA. I spent time finding just the right foreground and getting my tripod setup right and took a few pictures and different shutter speeds to see how I liked the water and the clouds. Before I picked it up I dropped back and took a shot with my phone showing my setup. That shot taken with my phone is now my FB cover photo. It's my favorite landscape shot of 2018 so far. That being said I always take a DSLR to new places I have never been before or areas I don't visit often. I fly out tomorrow for Utah with my camera bag.

Hope you have great trip.

Marty

Now I don’t have a second - lightweight - kit like Fuji’s and such, nor will I be able or willing to acquire such, especially since were leaving in a couple of weeks.

The reasoning behind this thought is:
- I am the only one in the family who cares for creating serious imagery. Therefore, wife and kids want to move on during walks while I am just still in the process of slinging my camera around and changing lenses to get ready to photograph whatever it is they have already seen.
- creates tension sometimes
- I used to be strong

When I was backpacking around Europe in the eighties I left my Leica at home at brought a Rollie 35T instead, and when I was robbed of that one in Morocco I replaced it with a Minox 35GT... No regrets the pictures was near Leica quality. Now, the EOS M with the 22/2.0 doubles as a compact for me, but I have a series of lightweight lenses to it that I bring ad lib mostly the Samyang 12/2.0 and the FD(not n) 50/1.8. The Sony RX100 series is often well spoken of if you want a compact. I have an Ixus 70 laying around but the keeper rate ain't that high.

That said, my Xperia M4 (Sony) smartphone has served me well then I left all "proper" gear at home. I'd say that them smartphones are the Pocket Instamatic's of the digital era! :-))
