p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Milky Way on the ocean

Yesterday I shot the first astro with the new combo A7r3 and 16-35 GM and thought to share here. The location is a 1.5 hours north of Sydney.

The sky was a single exposure of 20" at ISO 4000 f/2.8 and the foreground another of 3 min at ISO 500 f/2.8 as well.

Hope you like it, comments always welcome.

Beautiful Milky Way! Definitely some dark skies there. How have you liked that camera so far? I just got an A6500 and love how lighweight and portable it is compared to my Nikon D800/D750 and heavy glass.

Beautiful image. I love that you showed restraint in your milky way rendering! Congratulations.

Hi Matt thank you for the comment, indeed we have very dark skies just around the corner.
I switched to sony full frame 3 weeks ago coming from a Canon, specifically 5dsr as main body.
From an IQ point of view I think that the two systems produce both similar outstanding results, with Sony you can pull out more details from the shadows but really for landcape photography I prefer to have it right in camera by using filters. I slightly prefer the colors from Canon, particularly skin tones but I feel it is more a WB setting than a structural problem on the Sony.
In my opinion the game changers are the electronic viewfinder and the autofocus system. The EVF is wonderful in many regards: you can review your landscapes in the EVF and zoom in, you have a "you get what you see" type of experience before the shot. The Sony AF is imho on another planet, makes everything simpler and makes my life a lot easier.
Secondary would be:
- the gain in weight / bulkiness. If you want you can go really small and lightweight with Sony.
- the battery of the Sony is amazing and lasts well more than Canon
I don't think anyone will get better photos by switching to one system or another but in my case the switch has simplified a lot my photography making it more enjoyable and as a result I am selling all my 7-8 Canon L lenses as native options are now equally spectacular.

A W E S O M E ! ! !
How did you blend? I would think Sky at 3minutes would be blown out and have star trails?
Great image,
John

Hi John, blending was pretty straight forward, a simple mask in PS. With 42 Mpx a 30” exposure was still giving me some trails so I went to 20” and bumped up iso

Great to hear you have enjoyed shooting with Sony. I had some time this past week to put the A6500 through a few more landscape scenarios, even handheld I was loving the results. Which full frame version are you shooting with?

Please excuse my ignorance in sky/star photography, so you mean to say, this was as "simple'' as 20 minute exposure on the sky to see such amazingness? (I did see the blend for the foreground yes)

Clearly where I'm located I won't see anything close due to the insane city lights where I am.

Simply amazing IMO!!

20 seconds not minutes!

Thanks :-)

excellent composite.

can you elaborate on the how the sony af "makes everything simpler"? for static landscape, is it more difficult with canon af?

many thanks in advance for your response.

Thanks mate.

For landscapes I use tripod, MF and live view so the Sony AF doesn't make any difference . The Sony advantage for landscapes is for me the EVF (you get what you see incl. perfect DOF and after the shot reviewing images 1:1 into the EVF is great) and a general lighter kit to carry around. Other than that the differnce is more in the sensor, image quality, dynamic range etc..

thx. for the informative response.

i have the antiquated a6k and was surprised to learn power consumption of the evf is actually higher than the lcd. not sure if this holds true with the newer evf of the a9.
