From some pics I took for a friend while they were in town.

I'm not well-versed in portraiture - would more torso improve here?

Thanks for looking and C&C is welcomed.

I think the same look, but with him looking at the camera would greatly improve this shot. As it is, it looks like a snapshot (not meant to be a negative comment)

Thanks for the feedback, cliphe! Any thoughts on the torso cropping?

I like it, but, ... a couple of thoughts.

What does it look like if you added just a small number of inches down the torso and leave the space above the head the same?

Old school might dictate that a portrait be in portrait mode, not landscape. Have you tried looking at it from that perspective? That would eliminate a lot of 'vacant real estate' from the picture.

Rich,

Thanks for your thoughts! I want to say the issue here is that I didn't properly compose in-camera and that this is uncropped. My gut says that I need those few inches that you're suggesting.

I haven't tried a portrait crop, but that's a good idea that might help reduce the tightness on the bottom.

Agree with Rich - little more on the bottom will look better. Also a square crop might be better too.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm definitely going to mess around with a vert/square crop as well see if a content-aware fill can buy a little more real estate.

Cheers!

Many good points here Jeff! There is a way in CS6 that would allow you to expand the crop and use Content Aware Fill to fill the expanded crop to balance the image. I believe that the "portrait" mode might better display this young man. But that is just me. It is your photo and what you like, I like!
Personally I like the positioning of the boy in the frame. Most bust sculptures are from the position you display here! Why not a photo?

Dan - I must admit that I've been slacking!! Thanks for the nudge here so I can go back and add a little more to the torso and recrop to portrait.

I'll post the rework when I get back home in a few.

Thanks!!

Since this is the whole frame and you can't add torso, try a crop removing some of the deadspace above the head.

Thanks for the tip!

Below is a rework with a portrait crop and a bit more room added on the bottom with a fill.

Thoughts, all?

Jeff
