When I was a child, my grandfather would always tell me his war stories. He had joined the army at a young age when Japan invaded China in 1937, serving through WW2, Chinese Civil War and eventually at an USAF AFB during Korea and Vietnam. He was a military man his whole life and was proud of his strength and determination above all else, always telling me that's why he was so strong and healthy at such an old age.
Nowadays, as he approaches 100 years young, he is almost always silent. Whenever he talks to me, the words "I'm old; cherish your youth" never fails to pop up somewhere in the conversation. It is very shocking how my childhood memories of him drastically juxtaposes with how he is now. He often stares into the distance, as if looking back at his distant past.
