A couple of senior photos for my son, Noah. One on the Corinth street bridge south of downtown Dallas (thanks to my brother for managing the softbox), the other in my garage studio.

I can't decide which crop of the studio shot I like better...suggestions, critiques welcome and appreciated.

I really like number 2. I would say for #3 to crop in tighter. You can still see the city background,, but the subject is more prominent. I cropped it to show you what I mean. Just personal preference. All are well done!

I like 2 better, mainly because I like all the hair in the frame. In my personal style and preference, I don't usually chop off the top of the head. That said, I think the crop works either way. Do consider printing and framing!

I like how you managed the reflections coming off the trumpet. I work with musicians all the time and that is always a challenge for me. It's nicely done!

Thanks for the feedback! I wish I had asked him to use his concert trumpet...its cleaner and without dents.

I like #2 best. For the studio photos, I would have liked a low reflector to kick in a little light in his eye sockets.

What post processing/retouching method did you use? I think his skin could stand a tad more work.

The cityscape could stand a little more DOF. If you are going to put him in an environment, the environment should be more distinct. As it is, I have a few problems. I think you should have shot earlier in the evening. You could have still gotten the look but with more detail. A different balance on the OCF might have accomplished the same thing. The bokeh ball pyramid just to the right of his face competes with him. Finally, I understand you were going for a casual look, but it ends up looking untidy. The triangle of his undershirt at his waist is distracting.

Thanks very much for your comments. I did use a low reflector, but I agree that his eye sockets need some more light.

His skin has been a challenge for him lately, and I did one version with more retouching, but it started looking a little unnatural. Any suggestions on tools for this would be appreciated.

One of the things that I'm trying to work on is to notice the details around the image while taking (eg. the shirt, etc)...I think that is my next area for improvement.

We actually went out to the bridge just before sunrise on a Sunday morning...we would wait for the occasional car to go past, then I'd step out into the street to get the framing I wanted....with my brother watching for any traffic...a bit of a dance!

The other interesting thing that happened was that we initially were standing under some high-tension electrical lines and my wireless strobe started flashing randomly / rapid-fire on its own. We moved about 20 feet out from under them and it stopped....I guess there is enough broadband RF coming off those lines to get into the 2.4GHz band for the flash...who knew? :-)

Thanks again.
