Here are a few more shots from our Zimbabwe trip, comments welcome!
As several people asked for a trip report, here goes:
We flew into Victoria Falls airport via Johannesburg and spent two nights at Elephant Camp. This is a high end place about 20 minutes from Vic Falls that has a non-profit on premises that rescues animals and provides other conservation services - as a result they have a resident, hand-raised cheetah (Sylvester) you can pet and walk with as well as elephants you can feed. My wife loves cheetahs and had Sylvester fall asleep with his head on her lap!
Next up was Hwange Camp in Hwange National Park. As we were early in the season wildlife wasn't up to par but we did have one drive that was amazing - bat eared fox, running cape buffalo herd, being surrounded by six lions, leopard (for a second!), elephants, etc for a total of about 18 different species in one game drive! We had a great guide, tracker and driver to ourselves while there. Of note was it was darn cold in the morning and evenings. We stayed four nights there and had a good time, but as I said the wildlife wasn't as plentiful as I hoped. Being early meant there were many places for the animals to find water so they weren't going to the normal water holes.
Last was Mana Pools where we stayed at Vundu Camp. This is a beautiful setting right on the Zambezi river, with wonderful staff that was very welcoming. Vundu was the site of a BBC filming for wild dogs (over four years!) that had just finished, but unfortunately we didn't see any. As it happened we were the first guests in the entire park for the season - talk about being early! MP closes about six months for the rainy season.
MP is a really interesting and beautiful park, but again due to the season wildlife was fairly sparse compared to the Serengetti or other places. We did several walking approaches to lions (a mating pair, a lioness and a male with a kill), (Zim is known for the quality of their guides and their approaches on foot) and while there was some risk we felt pretty safe and stayed fairly far away.
