And it seems we will get a new native 24/2.8 lens soon.

Samyang 24/2.8 AF: (should be small)

Any significant difference between the Batis and Loxia for astro use? i.e. coma, ease of use? Tx.

I didn't have the chance to test coma for the Batis but the Loxia 25 performs great being similar to the Loxia 21:

I would look into the Batis 18mm if you are into astro. The 25mm is a tad too narrow for that purpose. At f/2.8 the Batis 18mm is slower though but it performs just fine at wide open. Personally and for astro, I prefer a MF lens more than the Batis 18mm however.

Thanks for astro comments. Guess I could stich if required but more complex workflow for sure. Love a 24mm fov for landscape and trying for a twofer. Curiously the Loxia has a narrower fov than the batis.

So these results are interesting since the Loxia and Batis are my two favorite series of lenses on the A7x cameras. But the back and forth is killing me. I own three of the Loxia at 21, 35, and 50. For the Batis the 18, 25, 85, and 135. So do I add the Loxia 25 and 85 ? I also have the 35/2.8 and 55/1.8 in the mid range and while they are good and small I would really have lie Batis versions but I can't simply go without and not shoot in that range.

I have to admit that these days when I go out with my wife she has no patients for me and manual focus which is why I have the AF lenses for primes. Otherwise I would be perfectly fine to use MF but this has persuaded me to own both.

Sorry, I am late coming to this thread. I have both lens and yet I have little to add. They are both very nice lenses, but as usual Fred has highlighted the differences extremely well. The Batis is a very nice lens and is quite good at any focus distance. It is sharp with a nice flat field. It does have some weaknesses, however, and fringing being one of the more obvious ones and it bokeh is only average, IMO. The Loxia 25 is a spectacular lens. Even sharper than the Batis, and has nicer bokeh, IMO, but does have more field curvature. The Batis is also a half stop faster and has AF of course and although a bit lighter is more than a bit bulkier. In my house I always reach for the Loxia, while my wife who prefers AF always reaches for the Batis. Depending on your preferences and use both can be excellent choices. Thanks Fred for another wonderful test.

Steve, from a color/contrast perspective, is the difference between the Batis and Loxia 25 comparable to the difference between the Batis and Loxia 85? (I know you own those as well).

Not exactly the same. I would say the difference in the 85s is bigger than in the 25s, but it is the same sort of difference.

Interesting! I agree it's the same kind of difference, but in my case the difference is bigger in the 25s than in the 85s. I guess sample variation. The B85 certainly varies from truly outstanding, to samples that are worse than the average FE85. I guess the OSS explains that.

As an owner of the Loxia 21 and FE 28/2, I’m finding it hard to justify the purchase of one of these lenses. It seems the Batis is quite a bit wider than the 28/2, so it’s not exactly a replacement. For travel I can take the 21, 28, 55, and 135. With the Batis or Loxia 25 I could do 25, 35, 85 and probably be fine. Can anyone sell me?🤔

Like swldstn, I'm struggling on this one. I greatly value contrast/microcontrast, so that would push me towards the Loxia. But I already own the Batis 25, and am debating whether selling it to fund the Loxia would be worth the price differential, and the loss of the Batis's advantages (AF, shorter MFD, f/2, flatter field...).

The thing is, I don't shoot 25mm often enough to justify having two lenses in that focal length. As opposed to 85mm, for which I decided I could justify buying the Loxia and keeping the Batis that I already had.

The best advice I can give you is if your not heavily dependent on Af in this focal length than get the Loxia. Or maybe better said if your not getting paid to shoot than buy what you enjoy. I need both of them one to make money and one more to enjoy. Kind of advice I’d give all hobbyists is you really want to enjoy the time you put into this and have fun. Some folks will only shoot AF glass and some of us just love to focus manual glass . Really what’s your heart telling you. If you don’t need AF than get the better lens.

Than you can sell me your Batis dirt cheap.

I honestly need to buy one but I’m really reluctant to spend the money on it. Having two 25 lenses is not perfect balance for me. It’s a total of about 2600.00 which is crazy in a way

Is the Batis 25mm comparable to the classic distagon 25/2 ZF.2?
I used the adapted 25/2 on the A7RII, and now finally have the Loxia 25/2.4, the lens that I hoped Zeiss would make. It is no disappointment, somehow the A7RII + Loxia combo makes sense in so many ways, just light enough to simply hang around your neck and not really notice, whereas the adapted 25/2 would soon become a burden.
Optically the Loxia also makes a lot more sense, good though as the classic 25/2 was. The colours in particular are much more realistic and alive, the whole rendering is much more natural and convincing. But likely the Batis is better optimized for the Sony sensor (than the classic 25/2 ZF.2).
I have to say that with this Loxia 25/2.4, I am now also fully "converted" to the Loxia rendering, which took a bit of getting used to with my first Loxia (35/2). A classic series in the making, with the low contrast bokeh as one of the "highlights"

Chris

Guy, I'm not selling you my Batis. The Batis, which I tend to think about more of as a 23mm sits close enough to my Loxia 21 that its not first on my list of what to buy next. As I said I want a Batis 35mm but not holding by breath for that either. So I'm thinking a 15mm Loxia might be next which would probably be the Loxia I would want.

I wish I did't review this thread and the comparison images. Nothing like a side by side compare to really see how a lens draws. Now I can't unsee

The Laowa 15 is really nice, good choice to get next. I know I was joking on the Batis

I would not hold my breath for a Loxia 15mm unless it was a F4.5 lens to fit the 52mm filter pattern. They are not going to break away from a 52mm filter .

So you think the Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens for FE is the best lens out there at this focal length?

Yes . I have a really great copy of it and it’s very strong on resolving power. Really can’t find any faults in this lens except EXIF data missing. The only thing the CV 15 has over it is nicer sun stars but having a F2 lens even just for focusing reasons alone makes it worth it to me. It’s a 72 thread but not a huge lens really. I think it just has more usefulness for stuff outside landscape only. Like street work, urban landscape, creative images and certainly architecture type work. For me it’s more general purpose.

Pair it with either a Loxia 21 or 25 and you have one heck of a nice wide angle package

Good call, Guy. I think I'm just going to keep the Batis for now and just be more conscious, over the next while, as to how important or not the AF is for me, since that's really the key difference.

80% of my use is for landscapes and the like, though 20% is for people shots where AF could be handy. (mind you I've learned to use my Loxia 85 as a portrait lens, and MF with a 25mm should be a fair bit easier due to greater DOF...)
