You're probably right. I've never shot wildlife before and just came to my regular category. :-) Maybe a mod can move it.

Thank you. I and a few others watched him eat for 5-6 minutes. He was right next to the trail. He was very cool and nonchalant. He would occasionally look back at us as if to say, “ you guys still here?”. He eventually wandered off.

this is a very nice image John. I see it was taken at 80mm and for some reason the subject distance is missing from the exif data. I'm wondering if you were too close to be safe it it decided to charge.

Thanks all.

I was using a Nikon 16-80 DX on my D7100 aps-c camera so I got some benefit of reach there. The shot is also cropped which helps it look a bit closer than I actually was.

I was in a group of 6. There were 4 others on the other side of the trail from him. I would guess I was about 50-60 yards from him at this point. Black bears are known to be rather docile if you don't challenge them. Everybody was very respectful and just stood and watched him quietly from a distance he was comfortable with. Prior to this shot he mostly had his back to our group while eating and occasionally turned his head back to look at us. He seemed totally at ease the whole time.

This composition was actually rather funny. He was kind of walking in circles when he turned around behind that log to face us. He plopped down and then just threw his arms over the log. A lot like a child plopping himself down at the dinner table.
