"Love Me Smiles for Ella" by Curtis Kulig on the Freehand Hotel in River North

First time trying to use a tilt-shift lens. I was going for the miniature effect which was way trickier than I expected - the focus plane is very sensitive to the slightest adjustment.

It also didn't help that I'm scared of heights and was standing on the 12th-floor rooftop of a parking structure holding the camera over the ledge and using Live View in order to get the right focus and composition

Ayas,

Super cool shot! Would prefer a *little* more of the scene in focus, but do like the pop of the love.

Is this a tilt effect in post or an actual tiltshift lens?

Thanks Jeff

I know what you mean. I wanted more in focus too but that'd lessen the miniature effect, which is what I was going for. That's the trick with TS lenses; less tilt for wider focus or more tilt for max miniature effect. I think you can strike a balance between the two by stopping down. My first time so still a lot to learn.

This was taken with a tilt-shift lens, the Nikon 85/2.8D PC Micro. No digital wizardry here

Nicely done! Perfect application for the miniature effect. And kudos for "putting yourself out there" to get the shot. Literally!

Oh and bonus points for using the assignment as a learning tool. That's what Fred's intentions where with these assignments.
I can't tell you how often these assignments push me into things I never thought I'd be attempting in photography. Unfortunately this has cost me $$ sometimes. But hey, I got lots of new toys in the bag for it now.

Haha thanks Dave! I kept thinking how silly I must've looked; firmly planting my feet, taking a deep breath, and slowly inching over to try and get the shot. Totally worth it though in the end

I agree 100% - I've explored new areas of both the city and photography that I otherwise wouldn't have thanks to these Assignments. Plus if they help justify GAS that's not too bad either
