Went back to check out the kites, trying for another in-air food transfer. Normally when that happens with this pair the male stays right side up and the female comes directly under him, belly up, to reach and grab. Not this time. It was very windy, so I suspect that may have had something to do with it.
This time the male tried to hover facing into the wind, while the female maneuvered into position behind him, and tried to reach the food that way. I watched three unsuccessful attempts. Ultimately the female gave up each time, returned to the nest, and the male then carried the food to her there.
