There is a really really cheap one going on right now here in local narket. Not sure how it does on Sony. Doesn’t have IS, but that shouldn’t be a problem with Sony cameras. Anyone used it?

Yes, Canon 400mm f/5.6L does nicely on A7R II and III.
Depending on the adapter, even Metabones IV, some will AF, some will AF only with good light (direct sunshine) if you focus at far distances. Others might only sometimes AF. Infinity focus is harder on adapters with longer focal lengths

Same lens, same camera, one Metabones IV focuses fine, another Metabones IV (same model) will not focus at infinity on a mountain without sun shining on it. A matter of adjustment for "infinity focus". But who will adjust it? Metabones? Maybe.

AF will be slower than on a Canon body, and with dust like in first image, AF may fail after hunting.
On A7R III you can double tap the rear LCD and manually focus with magnification.

I had one (recently sold it). IQ was excellent. AF on the MBV was decent - not fast enough for BIF or rapidly moving squirrels etc.

I have tried using the 400mm with the A9, with not-so-great results. It is unusable with my copy of the MBIV (camera will recognize the lens briefly, then totally wig out and lose the connection) and focuses very slowly, if at all, with the MBV. I wouldn't trust it for wildlife/action but might still use it for landscape or situations where you have time to manually focus.

I have tried it with both MC-11 and MB V. It works but slow to focus and hunts. You can manually focus on distant objects and that will help it to autofocus. As was said above, you won’t be able to use it for action or wildlife.

Thank you
Doesn’t look like it’s worth it.

I had one on my A7RII and then got the 100-400 USM II and I felt the zoom was much better it was almost as good as the 100400GM and focused quite good with the Metabones V.

I used one on my A7R2 for about a year and had decent success with the MC-11. I'm now using the 100-400GM and have the 400/5.6 for sale here on the forum.

The image quality is very good wide open and AF is usable albeit no where near as fast as a native lens. My main issue was the long MFD, you have to stand back from song birds on the trail just to get focus

Here are some static bird shots:

I've also attached a few samples of an eagle in flight, heavily cropped. This is part of one burst sequence. These aren't award winning shots but show what you can do with it especially having 42MP for cropping.

If the 100-400 didn't exist or I couldn't afford one, I'd still be satisfied using the 400/5.6 on my 7R2.

I used my 100-400 4.5-5.6Lii on both my Canon 6d and A7R3 with Metabones iv adapter from a tripod a couple of weeks ago. I found better detail in my 6d shots. I attribute this to the adapter. As a caveat, I neglected to turn off image stabilization on both the Canon and the Sony bodies, which were taken from a tripod, so really it is possible that the IBIS in the Sony interfered with the photos more than the lens stabilization in the Canon did. I will test some more when I get my 70-200 GM for the Sony.

I have this lens and combined with the Sigma MC11 it's outstanding on my a7r2.

I have been using the 400 f5.6L w/ my a7r3 and mc-11 and had great results, even BIF. The only problem I find is that lower light combined with a contrasty background can confuse it 20% of the time (choppy water may grab focus from the bird) but I find that if im trigger happy on refocusing over taking more than 3-4 continuous shots in AF-C, its rapid to regain. Not as quick as my native 7dmkII was (of course) but the shots in focus are sharp as a tack. Shots below per example. Major crops to show focus

I miss mine. I've thought about going the GM 100-400 route, but can't pull the trigger on a zoom. I may have to pick up another 400.

Bradley we've (the Mrs. and I) the 100400GM and the 200600G. So many times I grab the 400/5.6. No other lens out there close IMHO. The Nikkor 500PF I briefly owned was the closest I feel but it sucked on my Sonys. Hopefully before the year is over I can try the 400/5.6 on the R5. High hopes there. I did just order an EOs 70-350L for the R5 too.
