Gentlemen, i'm more than happy to report that the Sigma 500mm f/4 canon mount (newest version) works excellent with MC11 when pair up with Sony A9.

* ALL NATIVES FEATURES are available. (Eye-AF, Zone, AF-C, etc..)
* AF speed is super fast and accurate for BIF.
* It has no problem tracking subject in an erratic movement.
* It has no issue to separate the busy background.
* Light weight. I was able to shot handheld the entire time. When i'm not shooting, i sling it on my sideway.

I also test with Sigma 1.4x TC (latest model - TC-1401) and it works as well. HOWEVER, you lost "zone" focus. If you tracking your bird from left to right, no problem. BUT if it is appear from no where, it is struggle to get it in focus.

As of right now, this IS the longest prime that available with Sony A9, A7rii, A7 iii.

Good to hear. I'm going to try this exact combo next week in Florida. I'm hoping it will be an option I can consider in the future if I invest in Sony.

Is it 10FPS with the adapted lens?

Has Sigma said anything about offering future conversions of the Art and Sport lenses to Sony E-mount, as they currently offer for the Canon and Nikon mounts? I might be more willing to consider buying one now to use with an adapter if it could be converted to a native Sony mount in the not-too-distant future...

i called them 2 weeks ago and was told that they don't offer to exchange mount to FE on this 500mm.

As of right now, this option still the cheapest route vs Canon 500IS mkii and Nikon 500E VR. Canon 500IS mkii with MB is out of the picture since they're not consistent in AF/tracking/acquiring target. I don't have the Nikon 500E VR to test.

I would think it wouldn't be too difficult for Sigma to do this, since all of the E-mount lenses they're releasing so far are just the DSLR version with a built-in adapter...

i agreed. They're already got the licensing from Sony (big improvement on MC11); hence the release of the FE lines on Art lenses. It shouldn't be too hard to implementing this big prime to it. UNLESS they have something else in the pipeline.

yes. Same AF performance just slower than A9 in term of fps.

BUT you have more room to play with when you crop later.

Wow, I’m surprised to hear that. Pleasantly surprised, but still. I would have assumed that the superior AF system in A9 would showed an advantage, especially with long glas over the A7r III.

This is a very compelling option for Sony shooters. I’m hoping they make it native at some point.

Hi Alex. Thanks for this post! I "Liked" your same images and the additional video on your FB page too. Very helpful. This lens has been on my mind since it first came out (relatively incredible price for any 500/F4, full stop).

Personally, I'm waiting to see if the oft repeated Sony FE 200-600 rumour turns into reality or not. If not, then the Sigma 500/4 is on my short list for sure. My only hesitation at the moment is if Sigma decides to come out with an FE version of this lens or not. Either way, very good to know from your FB video, the MC-11 adapter seems to work well with the Canon mount version of this lens on the Sony A9.

That would be a huge incentive to me as well

What's preventing the MC-11 from offering the same AT performance as a "native E-mount" Sigma lens?

this is just a quote by Sigma "the new Sony E-mount models will feature a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the auto focus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed. In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Sony’s Continuous AF (AF-C) and high-speed auto focus, which are not addressed by Sigma Mount Converter MC-11."

Honestly, i think Sigma already implementing the algorithm into the recent firmware update to MC-11. But with E mount, you don't have to deal with the adapter.
