p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Subject is 400 metres away... is 1600mm enough?

Hi All,

I have a rather unique opportunity this coming week and I'm in need of some focal length advice. The subject I'll be documenting is roughly the size of a chicken and I'll be limited to a distance of 400 metres from the subject. I'll be capturing video with a super 35mm sensor - which is a 1.5x crop. Would a 800mm f/5.6 and a 2x teleconverter fill a fair amount of the frame? If my calculations are correct, it should be 2,400mm of reach?

Does anyone have experience using the 800mm f/5.6 with a 2x teleconverter?

This was taken at 600mm with a subject distance of 44.6m on a crop sensor. The focal length you are talking about would be similar to this at 4x the distance or about 180m.

From nearly 1/2 kilometer away you should get a nice photo of the horizon. That is if thermal currents in the air don't interfere.
