I'm glad you achieved the muted palette you desired, but I agree that it could use some more "punch". I think your processing is spot on, however, and I wouldn't add more contrast in post. Perhaps a different time of day with more shadows or variations in color/texture. I think the muted palette might work well for these without the zoom effect, but the zoom effect also reduces contrast and sharpness. Together, it's harder to get a sense of the scene.
That being said, I like the second one. The zoom effect is not really my cup of tea, but it does seem to work for that image. It might be because the zoom streaks align nicely with lines in the rocks in that particular image. The zoom streaks alternately run parallel and normal to the natural lines in a very pleasing way, and complement them very well....Show more →
Andrew,
Thank you for your considered remarks. In this exercise it is very difficult to know a priori how the final output is going to turn out, although after playing with it for a while you can hit the 'zone' of acceptability more often. I was lucky to come away with a couple of worthwhile frames.
As for shooting during a different time of day - it won't work in bright(er) lighting conditions unless you have a ND filter on since you need around 1 sec (or more) of shutter speed. And besides, the harsh light, shadows, and contrast wouldn't make it appealing (at least to my eyes).
