Found a group of these guys in a nearby town today and thought I'd try to get a few shots of them.

These are not albinos as most people think when they see white critters. These originated from a carnival animal truck back in 1949 after the carnival truck overturned. A local man captured the pair when he observed them playing in his pecan grove. A few years passed and one of the squirrels escaped and a short time later the owner let the other one go as well.

Many years later and they are now a thriving species in and around this small town.

Wild story, I love number two! We had a Lion Country close here and egyptian geese escaped, they’re now common in our area.

Yup. Their eyes have pigment rather than being pink, so obviously not albino. I remember the first time I saw a Red squirrel that was black, many years ago in the US. It seemed a few had crossed the river and established a new population on our side of the river. Over the years they became quite numerous. A few years ago I regularly saw black wild rabbits when I lived a couple hours north of Auckland. Different coat colors can become established in many species, it seems.

Interesting.

I had been led to believe that they only existed in Albion, IL (although, those may be true Albinos).

There is a similar population in Exeter Ontario. Not sure how they got there.

What sent me off looking for these well known critters was because last weekend while driving down the road (the same road I drive everyday to work) my wife noticed a white squirrel in someones front lawn. I'm guessing that one was an albino, but it reminded me about this town up in NC not far from my house and the huge population they have of these truly white squirrels.

Not to take anything away from these beautiful creatures, but I sure wish they were buffalos.
"Great White Squirrel" just doesn't have the same allure, if ya know what I mean.

Joshua - That's funny you mentioned the "bad hair day" shot. My wife laughed when she saw that one thinking it was his hair on his head.

I never saw it until she said that because I knew it was just his tail sticking up there. Crazy how we can become blind looking at our own images sometimes until someone causes us to backaway for a moment and view them with fresh eyes.

Thanks Morris. I'm not sure what the result would be but that would be cool if they did turn out like that.

Some of these did have a slight black or gray cap on top of their heads.

Dave,
This is an excellent series. Each are well-captured and great attention to highlights.
2, 4, and 7 feel especially expressive to me and are my favorites. But all are unimpeachable.
