p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What to Bring

Wife, our two kids and I are going out West for 12 day trip. Skiing two days in Telluride, Colorado then driving to Bryce Canyon National Park, the Arches National Park, Zion and then to Grand Canyon. Not sure what gear I should bring, as I'm hoping to pack fairly light.

Gear I have is Nikon D850 and these lenses, all Nikkor's: 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 Nikkor Primes: 24, 35, 58, 85 & 105 as well as the 105 macro.

Think I will be fine with just the 14-24 and 24-70 and that's it? I have an RRS ground tripod that is fairly small and I'll probably bring that too.

Thanks for the suggestions,
Mike

In addition to the 14-24/2.8G and 24-70/2.8G, I would also bring the 70-200. Long lenses can be lots of fun for compressed landscape opportunities.

I'm in the same boat - going for 11 days and Zion / Bryce is in the itinerary. I'm planning to pack:

D850, 14-24, 28, 70-200 (tamron g2). and maybe 58 (which is relatively light).

105 is staying home (or 70-200 is staying home - haven't decided yet).

depends on your style of shooting. I use the tele at grand canyon a fair bit. not much anywhere else. the problems is that a lot of the lenses that you have are pretty heavy, unless you go prime.simplest woudl be the 3 zooms.
option 2 and 3 involve brining the 14-24, and then either 24 70 and a long prime (105 macro) or two primes (35 and 105)

tele is very valuable at the grand canyon. GC is notoriously hard to shoot and very weather dependent. good luck

What I have learnt is, it doesnt matter which lens I brought., as long as I travelled with family and didnt leave the family pack out and walk away to take pictures. A life lesson for happy family trip

Thanks all, we’re on our way West now. Since my kids lose patience very quickly, to keep them happy I decided to just pack super light.

I only brought my Leica X-U and a small tripod. The X-U is waterproof, so I can even bring it skiing to get some cool shots, will strap it on my cotton carrier. In packing only one camera, I can relax & just enjoy all the sights & not fret over all my gear. Sometimes simple is better.
