p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Oregon Trip at the end of April

Heading to Portland at the end of April and I will have about two and a half days of shooting and need some help. I want to do the Coastline but I also want Multnomah Falls and either Mount Hood or Mt Ranier leaning more towards Hood so I can spend more time along the coast. I would happily take any advice I could get here. Will be doing day and night shooting. Thanks everyone!

2.5 days is ambitious, I would either spend all that time at the coast or the mountains---There are so many waterfalls near Multnomah as well as Silverfalls SP that could easily take a week to get to them, and that's not even including the Washington side.

multnomah is still closed. with that tight time table I'd head right to the coast.

I still want to get a couple shots of Mt Hood so that is likely where I will go first on Friday and then do the Coast on the weekend. Why is Multnomah closed?

First late last summer into fall. You can walk close enough to see it but not close enough to get much of a photo. Many areas around it are impacted as well. Googling might get you some info on what is open and what isn't. I was just there mid Feb. and it was definitely closed.

There was a fire that started from some kids throwing fireworks into Eagle Creek, and devastated a lot of the Gorge. Multnomah is open, but you can't get to the bridge as it burned above the falls. PunchBowl Falls was saved from the fire though as well. So pretty much you are confined to the concrete walkway

Anyways, Rainier will be under snow, and most of the goods will be under snow. So unless you want to snowshoe from Paradise to Reflection Lakes (not super hard, but will take a while), I would stick to the Coastline.
Why not hit up Olympic National Park? Same distance about, from PDX to Rainer - but you get rainforest, amazing coastline and beaches and such. I personally would do that. So if it is foggy and dreary in on the coast, that makes for amazing photos in the forests!

Not knowing anything about out there, I will look into Cascades as well. Thank you! I am not looking to get too close to Hood or Rainier, just some shot with it in the background. Snowshoing is definitely out of the question!

Let me know what type of shots you are looking for of Mt Hood and I can most likely help you with directions. What lenses will you be taking? Because you can take cool photos of Mt Hood from Portland.

If you choose the Gorge the flowers should be out - try Tom McCall Preserve and Columbia Hills Historical State Park (which will have Mt Hood in background).

I will likely be taking everything in my kit which ranges from 24-70 to 55-200 range. I am thinking about renting a 100-400 but not sure. As far as Mt Hood, not sure what kind of shots I am looking for so completely open to suggestions.

Given the time table I'd just go shoot from trillium lake like everyone else. If people are on the lake take a bunch of exposures and stack them to remove the people.

As much as that shot has been taken, this is for my own collection so that is probably what I will be doing. Thanks

You can get a pretty good shot of Mt Hood at Jonsrud Viewpoint in Sandy, without driving all the way to the mountain. I gotten lots of beautiful sunrise photos at Jonsrud. Trillium Lake road will still be closed in April due to the heavy snow we've received the last month.

Hey gang, sorry to belabor this post but looking at the web, It looks like certain places will be difficult to get in Ranier at the end of April. Anybody know any good spots to shoot it from a distance? Having NEVER been in the Pacific Northwest, I apologize for all the questions!

On the coast I would head to Bandon, Heceta Head in central OR or Canon Beach in northern OR.
In the mountains Trillium Lake is a favorite.
In the gorge the Women's Forum Park, the Vista House, Latourell Falls, and any other falls not affected by last year fire.

Can’t recall when the lake gets reopened, but you can always take your chances and leave your car at the front gate and walk the couple of miles to the water.

I’d skip Mt Ranier, plus in April, you will have a hard time anyway.

It will be awhile until they open the gate, still a big snow berm in front of it.

Much of the lake is still frozen over, so even if you hike in from the highway your odds of getting a great reflection type photo are pretty slim.
