p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Samyang 135mm f 2.8 for Sony e-mount

May I ask you what would be your reaction if Samyang would release a new 2.8 135mm manual lens which offers the same image quality as the Samyang 2.0 135mm ED UMC? Lets assume the weight would be 450 gr. versus the 880gr of the 2.0 135mm and the price would be 399 USD versus the 499 USD of the 2.0 135mm.

1. Not interested because of the built quality
2. Not interested because it has no AF
3. Not interested because it is too slow at f 2.8
4. Not interested because of the image quality
5. Not interested because it is not a zoom
6. Not interested because it is a 135mm
7. Not interested because I own a single coated 135mm

or

6. Sell all 135mm lenses, place an order and be very happy
7. For this lens I was waiting since the 2.0 135 was released.

What you'd like to get is not realistic. You cannot cut weight in half, make lens from f2 to f 2.8 slower and expect the same image quality. There must be compromise somewhere. The closest would be Batis 135 2.8 (610grams) with AF but at 3x price.

I don't think Samyang will ever bother with 135 2.8. Even if they could do it, 399 USD is very little to be made from it.

Is it unrealistic?

Samyang sells the 2.0 135 for 499USD
why not selling a cheaper to produce 2.8 135 for 399 USD?

Leica APO Telyt 3.4 135 weighs 453g - full metal body construction - no plastic
Olympus OM 2.8 135mm weighs 360g
Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 is not a 135mm but it is a modern, high resolution lens, it is 1.8, affordable and weighs only 371g
Contax G 2.8 90mm is not a 135mm lens but it is very good although inexpensive and only 240g

The current 2.0 135 lenses are "early" modern high resolution lenses. They are more heavy than the classic lenses (Samyang 2 135 ED UMC 885g, Canon EF 135 f2 L USM 750g, Milvus 2.0 135 ZE more than 1000 g). However, more recent releases of modern lenses of different focal lenghts show that the weight can also be low...

Yes, it is unrealistic.

Samyang already makes next to nothing on $499 135 f2. They will not bother with lighter, slower 2.8 MF version at lower price at $399.From business point it makes no sense. There was a rumor that Samyang has 135 f2 AF lens for Sony in the works. If that will happen im sure it will be cheaper that Batis 135.

Leica is nearly 4grand lens. No point to discuss any further. Olympus is 30 years old design, super cheap on Ebay. This would be your best bet at the moment.

The current lens is fantastic. If anything it needs an autofocus motor...

I would not expect a slower, smaller version even if cheaper.

The current Samyang lens is right up there with the Batis 135, CV 65, Loxia 21 and other top-notch lenses. I can't imagine they would make another MF lens at this focal length.

Have you seen the MS Optics 135 f/2.4 APO? It is not the price point you want, but I think it is a very interesting lens and would satisfy the size and quality you would like. Here is an excellent review at Philip Reeve's web site:

If they made one specifically for the e-mount, they'd probably make it AF and it would be priced in with their other AF e-mount lenses.

Realistic or not...I'd be #2.

I think, based on the replies there will be no Loxia 135 coming

I'd definitely buy a Loxia 135/4!

I own the 4 released Loxias. Will probably (begrudgingly!) pick up the 25mm before too long. I don't think I can leave a Loxia on the store shelf at this point, no matter the focal length.
