p.3 #1 · p.3 #1 · A7r2 or A7r3?

going to get back into digital, and I am torn between these cameras. I bought an A7r last year and it was ok. The A7r2 is better than what I had, so I will be happy with both. I never paid any attention to the A7r3 (or to be honest the A7r2 because the price was way out of my budget at the time), but I keep hearing how much better it is than the A7r2.

Fast forward to present time, where both are within my budget. I have two lenses, both Contax - so no autofocus is needed.

Dustin - bottom line is that I do not think either choice is bad. They both have their pros/cons. I still like my A7r's. Having said that, they are getting high mileage and so I just went through the same exercise you are going through now. For me I have a A7rII coming my way. Why?

Not seeing any noticeable difference in IQ. They both share the same sensor.

Like you I shoot MF (with exception of one lens). I keep things turned off that suck battery - in fact I do not even have review turned on. If I need to see it I will push the button myself and it's usually just to see the RGB histogram. So I get what I think is long life out of my batteries. And besides, the batteries are cheap and small.

I shoot on tripod. So I will be turning off IBIS 95% of the time. Although if I take an A7rII instead of my Fuji for travel I'll turn it on.

I have absolutely no problem focusing with the A7r so I expect the same with the A7rII. For landscape shooting the magnifier button is brilliant. And if the scene is dark and I need more in the EVF to set up my composition then I just turn the exposure comp to +3 and I can see into even the deepest shadows.

One of the big reasons I went A7rII is I want to keep the Sony Apps (which are gone for the A7rIII). I LOVE the smooth reflection (SR) app - it is a landscape photographer's dream!

The one big thing that tempt me to go A7rIII was pixel shift. However between PS or SR I will choose SR. However if your shoot detailed architecture the PS may be huge.

If I were to use Sony as my wildlife kit (I don't - I use Fuji) then without hesitation I would go A7rIII. But for me my Sony kit is for static subjects and I love the control I have with MF. So I decided to go with the A7rII.

In other words, you keep 2 systems for stills/actions.. and probably would have R3 for both, given the options?

In any events it does sound r3 may be a better option if budget allows.. of course it may also have downsides.. interesting product positioning by the company..

Everyone has their own set of circumstances. My case has landscape and wildlife and although I transitioned from one the best from Canon to Fuji (which BTW Sony had close to zilch a couple years back) - the Sony's offering for wildlife does not tempt me.

Just a note here i found out why they are using the older tech of the EVF from the A7rII and previous models in the new A7III body and basically from the marketing side of the world Sony wanted to boast about getting 710 shots on a charge to get there CIPA score to a point where they can say the best battery life on any mirrorless camera. So that sounds like it was all marketing. Thats not a option but a fact. I won't express my opinion on this again as i already stated it was a bad choice

You should just re-buy your A9. :-p That way you can get back 93% VF coverage and get 60Hz queries from the AF sensor (rather than 20Hz available on the A7III).

I've never use a cam with better AF than the A9. I'm not even sure there is one.

Im thinking about it for sure.

Trying to remember if I got banding with LEDs with electronic shutter. Certainly getting them on the A7rIII and I’m pretty sure it will happen on the A7III. But I can’t remember if I did on the A9

Not sure if this has been covered before. I’m doing portraits and I’m noticing a LOT of shutter lag on the A7RII. Does the A7RIII have the same amount of shutter lag? It’s making a huge difference in portraits because I keep missing the shot even with continuous shutter since the shot I’m looking for is right in between 2 frames. Other than that, the A7RII gets really awesome images with OCF.

I think the A73 may be your best choice. (Unless you need to make 40" and larger prints). Otherwise, the A7R2 should be fine.

From your opinion, what benefits or features in the A73 would make it a better landscape camera over the A7R2. I see 2 major and 1 minor feature of the A7R2 that would make it better for landscapes.

1. More pixels. Allows for larger prints and more cropping.
2. Play memory apps. Couple apps that really streamline certain landscape images.
3. Cheaper if buying used which allows more money on things like lenses, tripods, polarizers etc...

On the other hand the greater dynamic range and possibly the better tonal rendering with the larger pixels might make the AIII better for landscape. These versus sharpness -- an unresolvable dilemma (pun intended).

I am also interested in finding out whether the AIII has an AA filter. That might make a difference in landscape images. I have heard conflicting reports.

For me it's the little things that add up.

When you flip up the screen on the R3 the EVF is disabled so it doesn't switch back and forward when you block the sensor. Great on a tripod. Battery life is dramatically better. There's way more customisation of the buttons. The touch screen. Better shutter sound. Joystick. The MyMenu function.

For me the only reason to get an R2 is the SR app. The R3 to me, is a much bigger upgrade than others make it out to be. Those small improvements add up.

Ok, finally tried an A7R3 and the shutter lag is worse than the A7R2. Then I found the image resource article concerning A7R2 and A7R3 shutter lag times. On full Single AF center, lag for A7R2 is 0.212s vs A7R3 at 0.251s on a 35mm/2.8. Anyone know how to reduce lag on these things without borking AF? It’s not a deal breaker but it makes getting the right frame harder.

Videos I have seen say yes to AA filter.

That's a surprise, and an unfortunate one. Shutter lag doesn't bother me much on my rII, but there have been rare times it made getting the shot I wanted harder for sure.
