Given that it’s within your budget and those are your priorities, then I’d recommend the A7rlll all the way. The new and improved liveview is a major hit, especially among MF users.

How much improvement is there using Liveview through the rear LCD? Resolution wise there is a very slight increase...what improvements are you seeing using the rear LCD?

I don't see it myself - it's much more noticeable in the EVF.

I think the A73 may be your best choice. (Unless you need to make 40" and larger prints). Otherwise, the A7R2 should be fine.

I have them all, (other than the new A73), and the A7R to A7R2 was the huge change in evolution. The A7R2 to the A7R3 are minor upgrades, although very important to some of us. Battery life and Auto Focus were the two huge improvements. I still use both cameras and don't hesitate to shoot with the A7R2 when I need a second body. I just have five batteries for it, and wouldn't use it for fast action. Sure the response of the latest A7R3 is faster in every way, I don't think it matters much if you're shooting landscapes, products, architecture etc., IMO

I tend to use my EVF far more than the LCD as maybe I'm more old school just been looking in the eye cup for millions of years. But really depends on how you work. I just seem to be able to focus in magnified view better with the EVF. I do use both sometimes. This is on tripod or not.

One thing I do like on the A7rIII if you flip out the LCD the EVF goes off so its not bouncing around when you put your head close to the camera. Nice new feature

For the hobbyist I tend to agree . You don't have clients using your images either that do all kinds of weird stuff with your files or make wall prints the size of a mac truck in there office. I have had that happen more times than i can count. So i use a 42mpx camera for those type of shoots.

Here this may help

A Native 42 mpx camera file is 25.67X17.32 inches or (7790x5196 px)

A Native 24mpx camera file A9/A7III 19.70x13.13 in or (5910x3940px)

Thats all 300 dpi.

Now printing is a whole different Art but some will print 300 DPI on big inkjet or some folks will go I think 240 and gain more native sizing . Depends on printer too and thats a whole conversation not for this thread. But you get a idea of native sizes with 24 and 42 mpx cams

Just a note here i found out why they are using the older tech of the EVF from the A7rII and previous models in the new A7III body and basically from the marketing side of the world Sony wanted to boast about getting 710 shots on a charge to get there CIPA score to a point where they can say the best battery life on any mirrorless camera. So that sounds like it was all marketing. Thats not a option but a fact. I won't express my opinion on this again as i already stated it was a bad choice but I will let you all decide. Im still buying a A7III but for other reasons and mainly the AF points as the same as the A9 which is 93 percent of the frame

From your opinion, what benefits or features in the A73 would make it a better landscape camera over the A7R2. I see 2 major and 1 minor feature of the A7R2 that would make it better for landscapes.

1. More pixels. Allows for larger prints and more cropping.
2. Play memory apps. Couple apps that really streamline certain landscape images.
3. Cheaper if buying used which allows more money on things like lenses, tripods, polarizers etc...

Have to agree with chez on these points...if the camera is mainly for landscape.

Agree with this - for landscape, one can never have too many pixels, especially if you want to crop. Personally I loathe 3:2 aspect and always compose to 4:5, 3:4, or square, so I lose pixels every time.

thanks for ALL the input! Now I am on the fence even more On one hand, I could get the R2 and some glass (REALLY want the C/Y 21mm - but could get the Loxia 21mm + C/Y 25mm for same price), OR get the R3 and use the glass I have.

I grew tired of the A7r. Screen wasn't THAT great (compared to Nikon I previously had), shutter shock issue, battery life and was sloooow. I shoot on a tripod a lot too. Hate to admit it, but carrying 6 batteries on a backpacking trip isn't ideal. When i go on my trips to the desert, I have a Goal Zero Yeti I can charge from, but when I backpack, everything adds up.

As for prices, I am seeing A7r2 got for $1800-$2100 - even on eBay. If that is the going rate, I would most likely pay the extra $700 +/- and get the new one.

You kind of answered your own question the A7rIII but I know this is not easy. Btw I bought my A7rIII through greentoe. My bet since it’s been out a bit you could get a good price. Good luck either way

You probably know this, but there's no difference in battery life from A7R - A7R2. I have an A7R that's converted to infrared, and the 2 eats batteries just as quickly. The 3's battery is a huge improvement.

Keep monitoring the b&s forum here. There have been A7R2’s listed for $1,600 the last few weeks.

It really is. I rarely get to the second battery and never the third. We will probably never see another camera with the older battery even a new A6000 series will most likely move to the big battery. Battery life has been a constant complaint in the past but not anymore

So he obviously looks like the A7rIII is most likely his better option but you still are pushing something he may not need, it’s pretty hilarious as you obviously not even held the new A7rIII in your hands. I’m putting you back in hiding.

You constantly give bad advice.

The differences between the two are spelled out well here.

https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/preview/sony-a7r-mark-ii-vs-a7r-mark-iii/

With B&H trade in program right now the difference between the two cameras is only $700. The A7riii is $2,900 and the A7rii is $2200. If you have any old lens or camera to trade in this is a good option and you apply the additional cost savings for the trade in item. Something to consider...

Good point - I didn't know they were still doing it. I saved $300 on my "3" by buying a lens online - old but in good condition - for $25 and sent it for the trade-in.
