Anyone renting a vehicle in this otherwise wonderful country, be forewarned: NEVER let anyone other than a policeman or a service person from your rental car company help with any roadside difficulties, in particular a flat tire! 4 grown adults were scammed by pros including a nice appearing, "helpful" woman, Lost a purse a computer, all my Olympus gear, backpack, 3 passports etc. Be careful there and of course anywhere your travel!

Sorry to hear. I guess in the city you can get some low lifes. When I was there many years ago with my wife we drove 100 of miles around the country and got lost numerous times along the way and the people we met were all warm, generous and helpful.

To give one example. We had been driving for several hours and stopped at a small bodega to get some snacks. I asked if I could use the bathroom. He said no bano. Being from NY I assumed that just meant for employees only. So I asked again - adding por favor of course my Spanish wasn't very good so I didn't understand his reply. But he closed his shop, walked with me a block or two down the street to his home and let me use the bathroom in his small, 3rd world, extremely modest house. I was blown away. Needless to say we spent a small fortune back at the bodega to thank him.

I hope one bad story doesn't dissuade anyone planing to visit this beautiful, warm and wildlife rich country.

Any time I go on a long trip, I make sure all my stuff has Insurance coverage and keep track of all serial number and take photo's just in case. Sorry someone did that , guess there is always someone that's out there to ruin peoples trip.

Sorrry to hear that
I was there a couple months ago and found the people outside of San Jose to be extremely friendly and helpful
One incident comes to mind
We were following a Motmot and it flew away from the road into someone's property
Our guide asked the property owner if we could go inside and shoot and the answer was resounding yes. We all went and got the shot followed by homeowners giggling kids and dogs
Maybe the bigger cities have more problems

Major tourist destinations (cities) are notorious for pickpockets and scammers. Rome, Paris and Frankfurt comes to mind. This can happen anywhere in the world and one just have to be real careful when one is approached by "friendly/helpful" strangers. I've had a close and scary encounter with pickpockets in Paris; pickpocketing gypsies in Rome; and "nice people" who offered to take off and clean my jacket when one of them "accidentally" spilled ice-cream on my jacket in Brussels. And I've had my briefcase literally stolen from between my legs at the main train station in Frankfurt. And these guys usually work in teams.
