I am a big advocate of the "less is more" maxim. If you are shooting for documentary purposes, a bit of clutter in the background is fine. But if you are wanting to sell your images, promote photo tours, or compete in prestigious magazines like NatGeo and Nature's Best, you will need photos that really pop, and that means clean backgrounds with no distractions. But clean backgrounds by itself is not enough, of course. Your photos have to have that WOW factor. Petr Bambousek and Chris Schlaf are masters at their game:

Careful planning and execution is key to produce shareable pictures when in the tropics but I will be honest to admit that I also love "busier" backgrounds as that's what my eyes are used to see when in the forest. In any case, it's a matter of personal taste and mood!
