I sold mine a while ago, but I am comfortable saying I remember it was very much a focus by wire feel. Nothing special when it came to focus.

On my copy it's very smooth, but it offers less drag/initial resistance to turning than the Sigma, so it might be more difficult to make very fine adjustments in some circumstances.
