p.3 #1 · p.3 #1 · Sony 24-105 is creating a problem

I kind of get the primes vs zoom thing but kind of don’t. Usually I have at least one zoom in my bag and one prime. Often more than one of each. I may go out for the day with a subset of those lenses, which may or may not include primes or zooms. What I carry and I what I use for a given shot is a function of many variables. In a purist sense, unencumbered by constraints I would carry a bunch of primes. But time, weather, weight, budget, camera body choices made, companions, my whims or creative impulses or goals of the day may yield a different kit.

Sometimes having a well segregated lens kit makes my photos better and removes a bunch of cognitive overhead around photography. This week I ordered both the 40/1.2 and 24-105/4. I am thinking that might make a really nice two lens kit. Two very different frames of reference to choose between. Thinking I may enjoy that more than choosing between 21,28,35,55,85mm primes. It is nice being a hobbyist and having the luxury to experiment and not having to get the pic like a pro. I look at the kits on Shotkit and most of them are the same suspects and kind of boring kits. Of course they are all better photogs than me regardless of kit, but still glad I can choose whatever I want.

I even go further with a prime. When I have say a 25mm prime on my camera, I go about looking for images for that focal length and don't spend any time or energy looking at different focal lengths. Then later I might put an 85mm prime on and look at the world through an 85mm lens. It just allows me to zone into a given focal length and see the world through that length.

I find with a zoom I spend a lot of time trying different focal lengths and don't really get into a zone, but rather continuously

I find using a zoom much different then as you describe. I was taught back in a basic photography class that I took in 9th grade to use cardboard frames with several different sized openings to visualize a scene at different focal lengths. I wouldn’t carry the 8x10 cardboard frames around looking at different compositions. This taught me to experiment with different focal lengths and compositions. Moving around and trying different perspectives. I use the same basic approach with a zoom lens. I move around just as much and maybe more and frame scenes at various focal lengths and try different compositions. When using a bunch of primes it slows down this experimentation and I find it limiting compared to using a zoom. I guess it’s ‘different horses for different courses” as they say. I will often pop a favorite prime on the camera after finding the ideal composition using the zoom at the prime’s focal length. That is why I like carrying a couple of zooms and a couple of choice primes when I’m out doing some serious photography. My hope is that Zeiss will come out with a killer Batis 35mm to compliment my Batis 85 and Batis 135. That would be my ideal kit for landscape work including panoramas (12-24 G, 16-35 GM, 24-105 G and the 3 Batis).

Hey Chuck, given that you have the 12-24 and now the 24-105, why are you keeping the 16-35 GM?

I don't shoot Sony, but thought I'd pipe in.

I solve this 'problem' by only having lenses that do things the others just can't.

So, my workhorse is my Nikon 24-120 ( I'm jealous of Sony's stars at F/8 and flare resistance, but at least I got a great copy of my lens).

My UWA is the Rok 14mm

My fast / normal is my Tamron 45/1.8, which also pulls duty with light macro (1:3) work.

All lenses do something the others can't in a tangible way - whether a focal length or speed or macro distance.
I don't justify overlapping lenses with "well this microcontrast is awesome" etc. (not saying that's not legitimate, but I refuse to go down that road or I'll be there forever).

I like collecting lenses like everyone else, but I found when I have too large of a collection (whatever that number may be), most of them end up sitting on the shelves while I take "the team" out shooting. I then have to make a focused effort to ONLY go shooting with the bench warmers, etc.

After a while, I figured "what's the point?" and decided to make my lens choices much more carefully. Right now I'm looking at getting the Nikon 200-500 next and maybe one day the 105/1.4, then I'm done -- got everything I need.

I used the 16-35 GM as my primary wide angle zoom. I got an excellent copy which beats out my 12-24 at 16-24mm and my 24-105 G at 24-28mm. The differences are very minor but noticeable especially in the corners and mid frame. I also like the fact that I can use my Lee 100mm filters on the 16-35 GM and 24-105 G and the 100-400 GM. Carrying around the huge Filterrs for the 12-24 G is a pain. I will also use the 16-35 GM for Astro and low light work.

My problem with this is I have lenses for Professional use and some for personal use. Besides that I’m a lens whore and freely admit I’m sick in the head. I got GAS.

Zooms are compromises. The 24-105 F4 is more of a compromise than a 24-70 GM because it has a wider range (harder to hold IQ throughout the range), slower F stop (not as fast and slower when stopped down for equal IQ) and lighter/smaller (harder to sustain IQ with less glass).

There’s a reason Sony issued the more expensive 24-70 F2.8 first. They wanted to mine buyers for a more expensive lens. Now I have the 24-70 F2.8 and two 70-200 F2,8 lenses (adapted Nikon and Sony-wondering which to keep) as well as the adapted 14-24 and 17-35 F2.8 Nikkors.

So, for me the 24-105 is a speciality lens and not an opportunity to buy it and sell other zooms. My purpose in deliberate work is to approach or equal prime lens IQ by using the sharpest ranges of the overlapping FL zooms. For photojournalistic work a two body A9 combo with the 17-35 and 70-200 F2.8 is effective.

For a travel combo (not a photo tour) I would use my RX100 MKV and possibly the RX10 MkIV (likely to remain in the hotel while the RX100 is on my belt). I would not buy a fixed lens camera no matter what the IQ since I value many FLs.

In your Big Bronco tests at 28, field curvature is taking a toll at the top "corners" (which doesn't really show the very corners) at F4, where the image is still not in focus - and some of the hard vignette still looks to be present. The foreground corners look nice due to the field curvature though In my landscape pics I often have very distant objects in the very corners at the top and I don't see this working well at all for that scenario. I'd much rather use the Sony 28/2 at F/4. There are some better

The 24-105/4G's FC seems to be a bit complex at the wide range but it's not excessive. One stop down and it's pretty much masked. Focusing off-axis also helps.

Thanks Chuck,
I guess I'll be using extension tubes for my small butterfly images.

So far, only the 70-200/2.8GM and 100-400GM lenses are compatible with them...Not even the 70-200/4G is compatible...

Well I have and love the Sony 24-105. I purchased it thinking I would just take it and my Sony 12-24 (great lens) for travel. Then I got worrying about having a fast prime for inside cathedrals (next trip is Tuscany) and decided to replace the 12-24 with my Batis 18. But now thanks to a conversation with Guy I have ordered a Laowa 15 2 and will take it , the 24-105, and my Loxia 21. So I'm back to a "too heavy for an old fat guy travel kit". I need to stay away from this forum

I am tempted to rent this lens, to compare with my Leica 35-70. How is manual focus on the 24-105? the Sigma 14-24mm is a dream to focus with in manual mode - and I am sure that is not the norm with AF lenses?
