The problem is, I am using it so much my wonderful landscape primes are getting neglected.

I think I'll go for a walk in the beautiful snow today and just take a few primes with me and leave the zoom behind.

I found the same problem. I'm likely to sell off most of my primes in the wide angle to the standard focal length range. I'll keep the Batis 85 and Batis 135 to take when I don't need or want to lug the 100-400 GM with me on strictly landscape and travel type outings.

I see it as a good problem. This was how I shot in my Canon days, mostly excellent Canon "L" zooms and a few key primes. Now Sony has stepped up with some excellent zooms and I feel very comfortable going out with them like in the old days.

I consider this zoom to be outstanding from 24 until about 70mm in regards to resolution and contrast across the field...And that's from wide open.

However, the best native primes still do much better in terms of flare resistance, color and sunstar rendering...
At 35mm, it's probably better than any other native prime including the 35/2.8 ZA but I have not tested them side-by-side. Same goes for 28mm.

After 85mm, native zooms are primes will perform better but the 24-105/4G zoom is still quite decent when stopped down.

What I found on the loaner I had was 28mm could beat just about anything at F4. So now I have a great 28mm. Have to say 50 at 5.6 is also outstanding. I agree with Fred and in Big Bronco it’s very obvious from 24-70 is simply amazing for a Zoom. 105 is the weakest but at F8 or even F6.3/7.1 which I did not test those 2 apertures its really a good 105. But no way in hell would I sell my Batis 135. Lol

That's what I fear as well and held off ordering the lens uptil now. When I bought A7rIII, I thought to myself that I'll only using it with small primes and keep the RX10 IV for zoom duties. So my current kit is 28, 35, 55 and 85 but with 24-105 F4 on order, I might end up selling 28, 35 and 55 and just keep 85 for portraits. But then do I sell RX10 IV ?

Sometimes I need fast wide primes, and sometimes a zoom makes more sense, so I'll be keeping the primes (I have the exact same prime lineup as you) and adding the 24-105 at some point this year when I see the need. Next time I'm traveling is a family trip to Disney World, where a small fast prime can get me through all day as opposed to a big zoom that's not optimal in low light. But- I see plenty of opportunities for this lens come spring/summer.

As for you- I'd probably sell the RX10IV unless you find the need for a lot of reach.

Wasn't planning on getting the 24-105 F4 as this point but eBay cashback and 24 month no interest financing from PayPal pushed me over

It makes sense to sell RX10 IV but it is just such a nice package that can shoot everything from landscapes to sports that it's difficult to give up.

I have a loaner here. At 105 it is slightly sharper than mine but only by just a bit. Regarding better edge to edge, both it and mine get better from 5.6 to 8. Flare is pretty well controlled.

Yesterday at sunset from a very steep boulder hopping climb, which is much steeper and tough than it appears.

24mm f8 at ISO 100.

I dearly love my Zeiss ZF primes, but the combined convenience factors of AF, AE, OSS, and Zoom are hard to resist.

I did have a lovely walk with the CV10, Loxiae 21,35,85 (not enough pockets for the 50) and Voigtlander 180. Didn’t miss the zoom.

As long as this lens was decent, I was going to end up with it just because of the focal range. Because it's turning out to be fantastic, I'm having a hard time following my self-imposed rule of not paying retail (or close to it) for equipment...
I'll probably order it very soon.

It's a different experience shooting with primes. Sometimes, you don't have the right focal length for a specific scene and before changing lenses, you may try different angles and unique compositions. Something that perhaps wouldn't happen if you had the speed of changing focal lengths by turning the zoom ring.

In your Big Bronco tests at 28, field curvature is taking a toll at the top "corners" (which doesn't really show the very corners) at F4, where the image is still not in focus - and some of the hard vignette still looks to be present. The foreground corners look nice due to the field curvature though In my landscape pics I often have very distant objects in the very corners at the top and I don't see this working well at all for that scenario. I'd much rather use the Sony 28/2 at F/4. There are some better third party alternatives as well.

Well I recently re-bought the 24-70mm GM and based on what your saying it appears I should just stick with that. I bought this once and thought it was too big back when I put it on an A7RII. Now that I am shooting with a gripped A9 and A7RIII i rebought a used copy to use. Now ll this talk of the new 24-105mm G and its smaller size but it sounds like my new/used 24-70mm GM bight still be better in this critical focal length range. I also shoot with some very nice primes with the Batis 85, Batis 135 and Sony 90mm G. and the 100-400 GM so while the extra reach would be nice I really want the best in the midrange.

So which is better from 24-70, the GM or the 24-105 G?

The consensus seems to be that the GM is a bit sharper throughout. There was one person recently on dpreview saying that the 24-105's bokeh is very busy compared to the GM's, and I believe he returned the lens because of it.

My problem with 24-105/4 is my 24-70/2.8 GM. 24-105/4, plus some fast primes when needed, is probably better for me for travel use.

But then I don’t like selling lens much , and I think my copy is good. 2.8 is good for portrait too.
