When I last had a D8xx level body the Sigma 35mm f1.4 was the go-to 35mm given it's quality and price, however I've been looking wider at the Nikon 35mm f1.8G and Tamron 35.. f1.8 which has VC. All similarly priced and the Nikon/Tammy lenses are smaller than the Sigma.

Anyone using these on their D850? How do they stack up?

Had the Nikon 1.8/35 and hated it. Now have the Sigma 1.4/35 and it's one of my favorite lenses ever. Use it on D750

The Nikon's wide open rendering doesn't even come close to the Sigma's. I didn't expect such a huge difference but it is really striking. The Sigma is sharper but has better bokeh and less spherical aberrations wide open. At the current prices, the Sigma is a no brainer in my opinion. Some may argue that the Nikon 1.4/35 has the smoother rendering but I personally prefer the Sigma's sharpness.

The Sig is one of my sharpest lenses. Man up, it's solid and well worth
humpin' around. Nothing that'll AF comes close.

The 35 Art is an amazing lens. If it was rebadged as Leica or Zeiss you would not think twice about the price.

Right ok guys I see where this is going.
I've loved the Sigma when I've had it before so makes an easy decision, work the weight!

Might add the 24 Art as well!

Sigma for ultimate IQ, but it's big, heavy, and expensive (relatively)

Nikon for almost as good IQ, smaller, lighter, and cheaper

Tamron if you need VC

If you’re not hard set for a 35, I’d say the Nikon 28/1.4

I'll go against the grain here and submit my vote for the Tamron 35 1.8. I have critter's old one and while he hated it, I actually love it. It's plenty sharp on a D810, albeit not Art sharp, balances beautifully on the D810, and focuses very accurately (I'm a pixel peeper, too). What convinced me to go for that over the Sigma was: 1) smoother, more natural/pleasing rendering from focus to OOF, though YMMV; 2) class-leading MFD, allowing a 1:2.5 magnification; and 3) the VC, while good not great, has absolutely been useful in the evening and indoors.

Then again, I had a bad experience with the Sigma 18-35 Art due to its AF, so I may be biased in this regard.

Frankly, I don't think you can wrong either way. Good luck.

EDIT: To add a con to the Tamron side of the ledger, it exhibits bad LoCA at larger apertures, which you should be aware of it that bothers you (I believe the Sigma is much better in this regard).

Hi Mark. The 35 Art is virtually the same and weight as the 35/1.4G and Sony FE 35/1.4 if you are comparing f/1.4. Surprisingly there is very little difference. The longest lens is the FE 35/1.4

You are correct but from the original post I assumed he was comparing with the Nikon 35/1.8G rather than the 1.4 variant. If that is not the case then my mistake!

I think there are at least a few people here who tried the Sigma 35/1.4A and moved to the Nikon 35/1.8G because it is almost as sharp, cheaper, lighter, and smaller. The Sigma edges the rest out for IQ though.

If the 35 Art’s size and weight are off putting for some of your use, you could always pick up a 35 f/2 as well for when portability trumps everything else. Might be worth it.

The Zeiss ZF 35mm f2 is awesome in many regards. Can only highly recommend it!

I waited my whole life for a high-performance 35mm, and it came from Sigma. Made me a true believer! My other 35s (Leica M, Contax, Canon) feel diminished. The newer Canon EF 35/1.4L II is probably a bit superior, but not enough for that price to interest me. Plus, I want F mount.

My hands shake, sometimes badly. I require image stabilization. But I will not give up my Sigma 35. Just too good. Even better is that I got $200 off on an Amazon deal before xmas its first year out.
