p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A few pics from Cuba

Just got back from a few weeks in Cuba. Stuck to a common route of Havana>Vinales>Cienfuegos>Trinidad>Havana. All of the ones in this thread were shot with a Canon 5d mark IV, 24-70mm L f2.8 II. When I wasn't using just available light, I primarily used a single AD200 with a westcott 24" beauty dish, and in some cases used a second AD200 with either a Paul C Buff PLM 51" umbrella or gel'd as a kicker. Here's the full post on my blog:
http://www.sungparkphotography.com/blog/2018/1/18/23-days-in-cuba

and I have more of the environmental/street shots on my instagram at @sung.photo.

Btw - I sold the Sony kit a few days after I got back because I was reminded again how much I dislike the skintones they produce, especially when compared back to back with the shots I got from the Canon. I'd intended to give Sony another go with the A7riii, but I'm sticking with Canon for the time being for my client work. I'm likely picking up an XT2 or Xpro-2 as a travel cam though.

Thank you very much! This trip reminded me why I love Canon for taking pictures of people - the skintones are so good.

Photo with the horse has a blue sky but no shadows at all. Doesn't look real to me.

I love the shot of the cowboy and the horse. There are no shadows because they are shaded by the buildings.

Thank you! And yes you are correct - shows in the hot highlight on the buildings to camera left, as it was about 5pm. I have couple more of him that I can post up

Yes, only one of these is with available light only. The rest are 1-2 strobes plus natural light as fill

Love them all except for the horse photo. Looks very much like HDR was utilized. Something is definitely off with it.

Thank you!

Yeah the lighting in the shot of the vaquero with his horse is definitely a bit flat. My preference for this type of shot would be a large enough modifier to shape light around both the horse and cowboy, gridded to keep the light from splashing around the walls too much. Because I only had a 24" collapsible beauty dish, I decided to stick to lighting the cowboy plus the horse's head - and when I look at the closer cropped shots of those two elements, I like them better in some ways. The light on the horse has some shape up to its neck, and then beyond that it rapidly gets more diffuse which makes it kind of blend into the background a bit. I suppose this is where my whole approach of spending 2-3 minutes with each of these people occasionally had limitations, especially when setting up lights. The lights though did allow me to retain the blue sky in a natural way (I only did minor "slider" tweaks on the image so this is not a heavily pushed file) but I think the end result is not as 3d as I'd like. Oh well

Definitely a photographer's mecca for a reason! I just wish the food had a bit more flavor.. next time I'll definitely bring some hot sauce haha.

Yeah, and we (me and my wife) shot the Santiago carnival along the way. I still have the 70-200/2.8 lens that went there with me, although the camera and the 17-35 L are long gone.

Speaking of food, it's funny that there was a Cuban stall in the local Christmas fair last month. I was tempted to come and get something but was morbidly short on time that day. Well, till the next year. (actually, the Cubans were among the participants of the national cuisine fest the last two times, so maybe I won't have to wait until the next Xmas)
