85 F4 can’t replace a 85/1.8. The whole idea is different. Neither 50/4 can replace a humble 50/1.8. The pictures are totally different.

There is a yes,no,maybe in that statement. As you can see we got away with it. Yes I have a 85 1.8 too and some other fast glass. I don’t consider it a replacement for any prime per say but it can beat some that you have to stop down anyway to get any decent result. I look at it more as a compliment lens. But for travel it maybe hard to beat.

I am buying for travel and convenience use cases specifically. I will still shoot primes at 21, 28, 35, 40 (soon), 55 and 85 much of the time.

It does go to 160 @18mp on R bodies.

The lens looks real good, I just dont have any place for it. I've got the pair of cz zooms for landscapes, and a pair of 2.8 zooms for event type work, which hardly ever get used as is.... gear junky

The above show shots where supposed to be at 18mpx crop mode but my assistant forgot to hit the crop mode.

Everyone take note here. When in crop mode if you turn the camera off than back on it will go back to full frame. You have to engage it it. I have C4 mapped to crop mode. It’s very easy as you hit C4 it just jumps into crop mode on one press . Very convenient but you gotta remember if you turn camera off it goes back to full frame. I do understand why Sony does this as a default because 9 times out of ten you maybe shooting in crop mode and not realize it.

EVERYONE READ ABOVE COMMENT

Does crop mode impact a raw file?

Crop mode on the A7rIII is now 18mpx from 42mpx.

So, you end up with an 18 mp raw file? Or does the crop only apply to jpg?

Raw and Jpeg. For me its very nice to have this at 18mpx because shooting these runway shows at 20 thousand Raw images i do not need 42 or want 42mpx to process. Its bad enough processing that many Raws so at times I will shoot crop mode only plus you get the benefit of a 1.5 crop to extend your focal length. Which given there is no native 300mm the 70-200mm at the long side you get 300mm which I also need.

Anyone that considers replacing a prime with an f4 zoom already knows that f4 is the maximum aperture so it should be understood by all that any comparison is talking about overlapping apertures.

Quick question for you Guy: is there an option with the A7R III to shoot lower resolution files for easier processing, and if so, why use crop mode except when focal length limited?

[my guess is that a) it'd be more difficult to set up custom modes for both and b) the 24-105/4G and other glass you use are simply sharp enough that the 18MP crops don't lose you deliverable detail, and c) that the performance of the sensor exceeds what is necessary for your shooting and the extra noise is a non-factor]

Yes in my comparison talks I was referring to any prime at F4 not wide open like 1.8. Not many lenses in primes are this good at even F4 in the corners. Of course some are no question but think about it are you seeing these kinds of corners at F4 in a inexpensive prime. Not at all.

I found one in stock. See if I can buy it today. I’ll let you folks know if there is more in stock. Need a short term loan from my wife. Lol

Secret bring your wife coffee in bed. That softens them up.

I’m actually waiting on smugmug money but that’s the first of the month . I can’t wait that long. I’m too damn impatient

Yes my 28 f2 and 50 1.8 are on the block. Both new

I tested my 24-105 against the 28 f2 and the 50 f1.8 and found the 24-105 to be better than the 28 at every aperture but I found the opposite to be true with the 50 so I'm definitely keeping the 50 but may sell the 28.

Well I have extremely great news. The one I bought is actually better

Okay after analyzing the two lenses . Believe it or not the one I bought is actually better 24 got far better in that detail corner. 28/31/35/50 all look better . Slight drop at 68mm but hey that could be me and 105mm I picked up a full stop of sharpness. The loaner was great at F8 the one I bought equals it at F5.6. I hit the Bingo Button

The Photo Gods have been really good to me lately. One and done no lottery playing
