haha! She got you!

You captured great samples. Whenever the weather cooperates, I will post some infinity tests here as well.

Guy, that's about 1/3 of the field out from center, which is where I often do it as well, especially for a flat subject like this.

But, that habit is built upon the years of older lenses that had simpler field curvature variables. Not sure if any of that is of value with modern optics.

With older enlarger lenses, you really had to be careful about FC and reproduction ratios... these days, not really so much, but I got in the habit of paying attention for that because of enlargers.

Yea it’s my focus point for all my tests on Big Bronco. It always seems perfect since sometimes I do the small wall and they always match wide open. Now it maybe getting better as we stop down because of field curvature before infinity. Fred’s infinity test the field curvature could be a lot less because of the distance. Maybe explains his comments of not seeing any real changes stopping down. All good I would think

You guys are killing me. I finally thought that I was done with buying lenses but now I'll have to get this one as well. Though I have RX10 IV admirably performing the zoom duties for now so I can wait.

I think the only way to stop buying is to stop visiting this site

Yes, for sure! The 24-105/4G @24-35mm is really amazing from center to corners wide-open! Starting at 50mm, it only needs f/5.6.

Now, there is something I am still scratching my head. I tested my copy multiple times at infinity and 20-30 feet (like Big Bronco) and my lens does not benefit when stopping down f/4 to f/5.6 or f/8 at the wide range. Actually at f/8, I already see signs of diffraction when viewing at high magnifications like 1:1 or 2:1.

That's for the corners but it's also true for center and mid-areas where the improvement is almost nil....Not sure how

I'm sure it has been discussed before, but the 24-105 seems heavy. It weighs more than the 90 macro as a frame of reference. It also weighs about the same as the Batis 25, FE35/2.8, and FE 55/1.8 combined. However, you do get the longer focal lengths and a single filter size.

On the plus side, if it truly performs, it would weigh less than the parts of my travel kit that it would replace: 35, 55, Batis 85 and give me more versatility in focal length. My worry is the optical quality tradeoff? I am less interested in bokeh than sharpness.

The other tradeoff is the speed. The zoom is an f4 lens...primes are faster and lighter on the camera.

But, it weighs less than the 70-300, which is my other walk around lens, so I think I will be comfortable with it.

The Sony 24-105/4 G is very light for its range and aperture. It's about 225g lighter than the Sigma and about 150g lighter than the Canon version. I'm very confident it will perform noticeably better than both. Roger will post MTFs comparing these three lenses soon but from what I've seen, I believe it's the sharpest 24-105 ever made.

I get your point though. It covers the range of very light primes like the Batis 25, 35/2.8 and 55/1.8...However, it offers much more FLs than that. It's more like: 24, 28, 35, 50, 85, 100mm in one.

I find this lens a perfect balance of weight and size for a zoom of this nature. I’m actually surprised it’s as small and light as it is. Now I don’t use the hood but will buy a cheap 77mm wide angle screw in metal hood or just some blank 77 rings. Frankly I’m a bit surprised that through the whole range is as good as it is. Even 105mm is quite impressive and that’s the average of IQ focal length. That’s amazing to keep a lens this good through the whole range.

I'm trying to find some reasons not to buy it. Little help here! Might have to wait until my next trip though. Almost out the door.

You definitely should not buy one, as doing so will deprive Sony (and your dealer) of the money they'd make selling you a 24-70mm GM, or a trio of nice prime lenses.

Okay lets get into this and after carefully looking at 24mm there is very little difference regardless of aperture. But if I had to call it F5.6 just because.

Starting at 24mm. Left, right, center crops at F4

Maybe a slight touch of CA in the light fixture

Lets go to 24mm 5.6

Still a hard vignette at F5.6. Lets call it a 25mm to 105mm at this point

Not sure F8 is any better than F5.6. i don't see it but let me add a thought any lens i have tested in this focal length that was not good as this is at F4 i sold immediately. This really passes the acid test and its not its best focal length . I think 28mm is. thats next

Just remember folks this is maybe one of the most brutal real life tests. Its killed many expensive lenses out there. You beat Big Bronco thats saying something.

Okay this is better than 24mm and its maybe the best 28mm I have seen. I just found my 28mm lens that we all want so bad, this is it. At F4 it does not get any better stopped down

28mm F4 actually its 29mm

Field curvature is strongest at 24mm so 28 and 35mm seem stronger. However, if you focus on the corner at 24mm, it gets noticeably sharper on that area. (In detriment of the center...)
