p.2 #1 · p.2 #1 · which flash for A7 A7Riii A9

Literally just ordered a couple AD200's with the AD-B2, a V860II and the new trigger today after researching for a while (flashpoint from adorama). I shoot events but am rarely using TTL. As far as I can tell the godox / flashpoint stuff is a really comprehensive setup. The new Sony flash is going to be nice I'm sure but at $600 a pop and only speedlites on offer it's certainly not a way I'd go but I'm sure they would serve some very well.

I got a Flashpoint based on the recommendation of people here. I mostly shoot travel and therefore don't use flash a lot, so I haven't run into this problem yet, but it would have been nice to have considered this issue before I bought. Can you point me towards a description of the "workaround" you mentioned? Thanks for your time.

I don't know if I'm allowed to link to "the competition" but this is from another forum. The issue is interspersed in posts to the linked thread. You can scroll back to find more info around the time it was originally noted, or forward to find posts re: the current state. The bottom line is at f/4 or higher, it tends to underexpose. Some have said that the underexposure varies, such that you can't simply dial in FEC to adjust. Others have said that no, it's a pretty stable underexposure so that you CAN simply take a shot, dial in FEC to compensate, and continue with TTL.

I think you're going to be very happy. I have been using the AD600 and an older AD360 for the past few months. My pair of AD200's arrive today (the kit with the AD-B2)! I've shot a couple of events in the last few months (not my forte) and wished I had them for the events.

The workaround is quite simple. Just push flash compensation either on camera or trigger if you go below f4. I did a test once and it seems to be up to 1.5 stops with the highest peak around f1.7 (see diagram below). But it depends also on the used lens and actual situation (here it was 1/1000s, HSS, with an LCC plate in front of the camera).

On top of that I would add a default EV push. In the test I added +2 1/3 EV. Normally I use something around + 1 to 2 EV. Also if aperture is slower than f4.

Just as an information. This was shot with the x1t-s trigger (with the latest firmware) not the new pro version. I don't have the new one. But others told the "issue" is still there with the new one.

1/1000s, ISO100, HSS, TTL-mode
