I'm new to Sony

I'm all set with glass and bodies. Except for LIGHT! I have no idea where to begin. I just became aware that there are TWO sony hot shoe types, after getting all the wrong stuff. So I have to return it.. Sorry for being a n00b.

So there is the new sony shoe, which is on the A7riii, which is dubbed ISO shoe?
Then the old shoe, which is styled after the old Minolta gear, so that is dubbed Sony/Minolta shoe, aka MI shoe. right?

Please do not order anything based on my links here. Let me clean it up after we hear from the experts. I don't see a thread on this yet. I also don't know when they changed from the MI to the ISO. Do the a7r2 and r3 have the same shoe of different?

I would prefer to have a flash that has a built in transmitter/receiver, like the Phottix Mitros+ units. So you can use the flash on body. and have another flash off body, without needing controllers. the flash units each have built-in controllers. What should I go with?

I want to start out with two units. Ultimately I may end up with five total and use three of them for reception. With two on body.

All those are compatible with the A7R3 but I personally prefer to buy the Adorama versions of Godox like the first one you linked.
No, are you planning on doing only on camera flash because I hope your idea is take this off camera and in that case, one of the fan favorites is the eVOLV200 like this one:

THere are kits that include the Sony transmitter too. Those units are way more powerful than the speedlight and there is even a special kit of dual units with a flash head that can add both bulbs for 400w power and that goes for $500 after applying a special coupon code. It is an insane deal!
The other option is you want more power is the Xplor600.
All those are part of the Godox system so they all work together.

there will be times when I use a flash with a 35 and walk around with it mounted.

there will be times when I use a flash mounted, and hope to have the flash transmit a signal to off camera flashes on stands.

@Dj R, perhaps not the info you are looking for, but I will offer my 2c.

Go with the Flashpoint (rebranded Godox) system. It works flawlessly, and is relatively cheap, especially on sale. It's not Profoto, but it's close, and for the money I absolutely cannot complain.

I run two Flashpoint XPLOR 600s in studio for high volume ecommerce model work, but I'm a little odd and shoot a Nikon D750 and Sony A6500 on the same lights simultaneously. All it takes is the respective R2 trigger mounted on top of each camera. Nikon on Nikon, Sony on Sony.

I've also used the same XPLOR 600s in conjunction with with the Flashpoint V860II speedlights on camera and off camera. The speedlight acts as a transmitter for all lights, which is a bonus. All lights communicate flawlessly.

That's the correct trigger.

If you're staying with one group it won't be so bad.

Or you can preorder this guy which would be easier to maneuver.

Just to clarify your question "MI" is multi-interface, which is the modern shoe that also accepts standard hot shoe flashes. "ISO" is the older style - I think there may be few flashes still being made for those, and they were the units carried over from Minolta cameras.

I have the Godox 685 MI unit and it works fine on the a7 series. I tend to use it off-camera with that X1 trigger system. I will say all the units that have an "MI" shoe are delicate, as they all seem to use the same plastic shoe with narrow narrow "teeth" rather than a full rail or something metal to actually fit into the shoe. fortunately I do not mount the flash off-camera via the shoe mount, and the transmitter is lite and short, so seems reasonably secure on the camera.

Anybody considering Flashpoint/Godox flashes, should that the manual warns of overheating and shutoff after 100-200 pictures (depending on flash intensity). This is usually good enough for a family outing but not to cover an event. I can post the exact numbers if desired.

For me it was the cost and usability factor. Sony makes very expensive products, and the Flashpoint (Godox) system is ridiculously easy to use - it's easier than my Canon RT setup, my Paul Buff Cyber Commander setup, and my Sony setup. It is plug and play rock solid.

Add in smaller size of product as well as one remote trigger than controls speedlights, strobes, whatever category you put the AD200, as well as receivers that allow you to control Sony speedlights - it's just a great system.

Yes, that should work fine. Why do you think it doesn't work on the A9?

The Sony Alpha series (A7/A9) share the same hotshoe interface. All of the Flashpoint products that are MI-shoe work on all of the Sony Alpha A7/A9 series cameras. There is a bug affecting all of them related to using full TTL functionality at high apertures (greater than f/4) which is exhaustively documented in other threads here or on other forums. This can (mostly) be compensated for by the photographer in camera settings, or you can simply switch to manual control over power settings.

FlashHavoc has a "Godox/Flashpoint System Overview" which details the products, how they interact with each other and the triggers. It's helpful in understanding what the system does.

That will work for all e-mount cameras. You have to go back quite a few years to find a camera that had the older Minolta hotshoe. It would look like this picture

Been googling around, and the threads I'm finding on the TTL bug you mentioned are about a year old and generally say a software fix was pending. Was this issue not ever fixed, and if so has it been declared essentially unfixable for some reason? Are Sony's own flashes similarly affected?

Unfortunately, no software fix has been issued. The "disclaimer" is still present on certain (not sure if all) Flashpoint products on Adorama's website.

AFAIK, this is strictly a Godox/Flashpoint software issue, and does not affect Sony's flash ecosystem.

This is also an issue that affects a specific user group - those who want/need to shoot TTL AND at apertures of f/3.5, 2.8, 2.0, 1.4, etc. For my purposes, I am nearly always manual, and in the situations where I would use TTL (events), I'm likely shooting at an aperture greater than f/4 for better depth of field. I'm sure there are folks out there who want/need to use TTL when shooting a high aperture, but I would also guess that's a small portion of the user base and there is a bit of a workaround to fix it anyway. I think the issue has been somewhat overblown.

I got a Flashpoint based on the recommendation of people here. I mostly shoot travel and therefore don't use flash a lot, so I haven't run into this problem yet, but it would have been nice to have considered this issue before I bought. Can you point me towards a description of the "workaround" you mentioned? Thanks for your time.
