p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sony Time-Lapse App Issues!

I am working on a fairly large project and keep running into the same issue, so I am turning to you all for some help in a solution!

I am getting really unpredictable results from the Sony Time-Lapse app. Sometimes it shoots an entire 300 image sequence and sometimes it fails randomly (anywhere from 8 to 150 images). Essentially, I am unable to rely on teh cameras to capture an entire time-lapse sequence, as it fails more often than not.

Gear I am using: Sony a7rii and Sony a7sii, Sigma MC-11 Adapters, Sigma 14 and 24mm lenses

Typical Time-lapse app settings: Saving Images only, 11 second intervals, 300 images, Tracking set to HI.
Camera settings: Compressed raw images, manual focusing, NR off, 10" exposure, F1.8, ISO3200

What I've tried so far:

1. Did a reset to factory settings on both cameras, firmware updates and reinstalled Time-lapse App
2. Used various memory cards from both Sandisk and Lexar. card speeds are 95 mb/s to 280mb/s
3. Temperature check - shooting outdoor timelapses in Canadian winter, but camera also fails shooting in my hotel room
4. Battery check - the battery isn't dying, I've also attached an external battery

Anyone have any more ideas

How does it fail, just stops taking pictures? Does the camera turn off or stays in the time-lapse app?

Does the issue happen with shorter exposures (relative to the interval of 11s)?

I can't answer your question. If you decide to get an intervalometer, Hahnel makes the Captur Timer Kit for Sony. It works well with my A7RII.

Like sikaheimo, I suspect it is caused by the interval being too close to the shutter speed. Probably doesn't leave enough time for the camera to 'get ready' for the next shot.

Do a test, bump the interval from 11 seconds to 13 and see if it stabilizes.

I've not had a failure in my recent uses, but I've not been shooting RAW. I'd guess a buffer issue on the A7rii, but the A7sii surprises me, since the files are smaller. Are the failures with fewer photos coming from the A7rii?

I haves used the app on several cameras (2 Rx100 m3, Rx10 m2, A7R2) and haven’t bumped into issues yet. My interval is even shorter than yours, usually 3 or 4 Sec , during and after sunset, so the sensor rarely get rest and I usually got 901 files (Raw + Mov) if I didn’t stopped it in the middle...

Unless you are using very slow card, it should handle 3s interval shooting raw (I think I have tried 2s and it works, 1s will definitely fail)

Is it possible that it’s too hot internally? 10s exposure x 300...
when I abhor timelapse, I always flip the screen out and set the screen brightness to dim ( there’s is such an option in the app, unless you are using an old version and haven’t updated it for a long while)
