I am not a wedding photographer, but I'm curious as to your experience using gridded flashes, especially at the reception. Is it because

1. Even with the flash zoomed all the way, there is still too much spill

2. I want to hide the source of the light in the photos

3. Other reason

Examples welcome.

Mostly #1. I typically put them at two corners of the reception room. Without them I might have too much spill onto a close by wall or two much spill on the dance floor.

I usually do not grid the reception flashes, instead I'll use the grid on a flash when I'm making portraits. In my experience, grids work great when front lighting subjects, because you can be more precise about where you want the light to not fall... and also while trying to artificially backlight a subject because you can control the spill and stop the extra light from messing with the exposure too much.

We use grids for detail/decor shots — gets the light just where you want it and the decor seems sharper.

As much as I use them, I have to admit they slow me down terribly shooting people. Something to work on for 2018 :-)

Love grids.... magmod... quick - easy and pain less.
I also like the umbrella softbox.

basically get out and play to find out when to use modifiers and when not too.

large receptions .... 1000+ guest no grid on flashes close to dance floor...but grid flashes father away

We've added grids to our standard dance floor setup this year and has made a noticeable difference. Zooming the flash can help, but mostly it just throws more power to the center. The grids help keep spray off the ceiling and walls. It can be difficult though, as the light pattern is very focused. If the action isn't in the center of the dance floor we're constantly turning lights to hit where we need.
