Hate to start a thread like this because sometimes they get out of hand but if we could do this constructively as something to pass on to Sony for firmware updates.

One thing I noticed is AF focusing seems a little jumpy. I need to get outside in better light to test this but something I’m noticing.

Now I have yet to find certain things and maybe I’m missing them

My Menu can we get that at least in the Fn menu

Still trying to figure this out but love to see a way you can group let’s say Eye Af, Af-c, wide area ,shooting mode, drive mode and more options into a recall button that you can assign to a custom function. It’s seems limited

I’m still churning through some of this and maybe not seeing it

I am seeing a few seconds of what I can describe as AF pulsing, before AF locks on to subject when I first fire the shutter using the 2.0xTC on the GM 100-400 with the A7rIII. I don't see this AF pulsing with the A7rIII + 1.4xTC on the GM 100-400 or GM 70-200. No AF pulsing with the A9 with either TC.

Not sure if its just my gear, or maybe A7rIII, 2.0xTC or GM 100-400 needs a firmware update to be fully compatible with each other.

Anybody else able to confirm a few seconds of AF pulsing with A7rIII + 2.0xTC and GM 100-400 ?

Using 2.0xTC with 100-400 puts aperture at F/11 and that is over over PDAF limit (F/8) of A7RIII. So the pulsing you are seeing is CDAF focusing doing it's thing. With 1.4x TC you are at F/8 so PDAF works ==> no pulsing.

the A9 can focus with PDAF until F/11 so you would not see this behavior on A9 body,

Thank you. Very good to know.

Guy , with regards to grouping settings into a recall button I’ve read you can do this (can’t test as I have a7rii) however here is a cut and paste from someone on the Sony forum in potn (he’s also on FM as Mystik)

“a7rIII/a9 shooters....anyone ever use the recall custom hold toggles? I saw this setting on the a9 but sort of glossed over it, but its actually really useful. You basically program a set of exposure and focus settings, and if you map a particularly recall custom hold setting to a button it will toggle those exposure settings and engage the AF with those settings. I mapped my c4 button to a recall custom hold setting with a wide focus area, AF-C, and high continuous shooting...that way if I need to shoot something quickly on the fly and my AF point is locked in the wrong position, I can quickly hit C4 to start the AF with those settings. It basically becomes a third back button focus button (eye AF being the other) that overrides the AF selection and focuses wide when needed. You can use these custom hold settings for things like SS, aperture, ISO...whatever you think you might need to quickly toggle on the fly.”

Okay so it really sounds like a extra custom button more than a primary one. Still a great idea, going to get one going than

So it does look like a bug in setting up your file names. For me it is GMP instead of DSC and at first it caught the jpegs in slot 2 but not the raws in slot 1. Having reset it and tried again its in neither now. Ill keep working it but its not sticking. Anyone else, I know Bob said the same

today I was going to review some images and the only video I ever shot so far.
I went into playback mode. the camera was only allowing me to look at the video. couldn't navigate left or right and see the images.

weird?

I've changed my file prefix and while it shows up in the menu option as the new prefix, it does not write it to the card, still DSC. I've pulled the battery and formatted the card and it make no difference.

When I first got my A7RIII, I changed the file name to FM7. (7 for 2017)
The files were still being written as DSC though. Formatting the card didn't help.

Today, I changed the file name again and immediately formatted the card and it worked. I also temporarily changed 'file number' from series to reset to make numbers start at '0001'. Now that it's taking the new prefix I reversed file number to 'series' again. Seems good but I'm still not sure what really fixed it.

Just tried this and it worked! Thanks Fred.

I suspect it's the "reset" setting that is the key to making the change stick.

Well, I tried this and it didn't work for me.

Here's what I did.

1. Set File Name to RJI
2. Reset file number and left setting to reset
3. Format card
4. Take Picture
5. I get a file name of DSC0001.ARW
6. Tried then taking file number menu setting from 'reset' to 'series'
7. Take picture
8. Filename is DSC0002.ARW

Everything on the camera has been flawless but now I'm obsessed trying to get this to work. Prior to the above, I even took the card and erased it via disk utility on my iMac.

Don't you just love the 'consistency' of new technology

Try changing the file name to something else and repeat steps 2, 3 and 4. I know...it should work the way you described.

I could have sworn I did exactly that but perhaps not. Anyway, it works!!! I was able to change it twice, first to RI7 and then to RJI. Thanks for the tip! But it shouldn't be so syntax specific. Not intuitive at all . . .

Testing the AF with the GM 85, I found in medium lighting wide open it would almost lock on the face and then sweep the focus back then forward to the correct position. This adds about 1/2 sec to the focus locking. It would seem the first position found for the AF was correct and it then moves away to re confirm the correct AF. Maybe a setting issue?

Still waiting for my camera, but I tried out a friend’s A7rIII indoors during the week-end, and we observed severe striping with the silent shutter, which I understand is due to lights pulsing (mostly halogen lighting in the room, and I believe the TV was on at the time). The same shots with the mechanical shutter did not show any stripe. I think it is a known phenomenon and limitation (there is a note on this in the manual), and apparently it was even observed on the A9.

We did not know this at the time, so we did not try different shutter speeds (or turning off certain lights and the TV) to see if we could get around this. Certainly something I will investigate further when I get the camera, as this is a feature I was looking forward to use indoors at specific events.
