When this snowy owl blasted off from the beach, a colony of about 500 dunlin sandpipers took to the sky to create interference patterns as a defence. Little did the dunlin know, snowy owls eat rodents.

Actually, they eat about anything. They have been seen picking off hovering kestrel, attacking all sorts of birds in flight (herons, geese, etc.).

I did further research and it appears that the National Geographic Complete Birds of North America has incomplete information.

The owl was gong so fast that by the time I realized what was happening I barely got this one shot off lining them both up
