Nice work, it is interesting to see what people get at their feeders around the country. Red-bellied Woodpecker is a regular at my feeders, nobody wants to mess with them either!

Downy woodpeckers are attractive and interesting birds. Didn’t realize that they were rare in ohio, but glad that you got to observe (and photograph) one.

Mea culpa - how can I mistake a red bellied for a Downy? Could it be that’s what I’m used to seeing?

Thank you all for your kind comments.
For the last couple years most birds have been rare at my feeders. I attribute it to two factors: 1. we have seen a grand uptick in the number of hawks and owls
in the immediate vicinity, Both are heard, the owls have not yet been seen by
me, but the raptors have been, and occasionally leave a mess of feathers as their
calling cards. 2. we have a large number of electric generating windmills directly to the north of town for about one and a-half county spans. The downturn in bird
numbers seems to directly coincide with the sprouting of the windmills. My wife has gone to calling them "mushrooms" as more seem to sprout up overnight.

I enjoy having the red bellies visit my feeder. Looks like you shot through glass and got a slight green tint that would be worth removing if you want to print

No electrical windmills here but plenty of Raptors. The Cooper's raid the feeders quite often. The Redtails harass our chickens. Just goes with the territory

Hey, congratulations Douglas! Always nice to tick off a new species (so to speak). I wonder if now they know of the food source, whether they'll be back.

Interesting observation about the windmills. They've been quite controversial here for a long time in part because of the potential for adverse impacts on birds.

Thanks for posting.
