Interesting. I had to go look up the difference.

According to the guide there is a mode that offers both. Does it double tap work in that mode?

"Menu item details
Touch Panel+Pad: Activates both the touch panel operations when shooting with the monitor and touch pad operations when shooting with the viewfinder.
Touch Panel Only: Activates only the touch panel operations when shooting with the monitor.
Touch Pad Only: Activates only the touch pad operations when shooting with the viewfinder."

That's the mode I said I hadn't tried.... But your wish is my command. Yes it does work in that mode!

I'm playing with this thing all day since this morning and battery is still 55%...that's without even giving it a chance to fully charge it.

So, yes, the new battery is a big plus.

The battery is approximately 2.2x the capacity of the NP-FW50 so in theory you'd see battery life a little more than double the RII, unless Sony made other efficiency improvements. Definitely a very nice boost.

I've got enough NP-FW50 batteries now that the issue of battery life is mostly moot for me but definitely one of the more compelling upgrades for many users. My shoots don't tend to last long enough to chew through even one A7RII battery so having to swap them out regularly has never been an issue for me.

Sorry if I missed this, but: If apps are gone, how do you shoot this camera with your smartphone, aka. Smart Remote?

Has anybody tried Eye AF on a Canon EF with the Metabones adapter? I don’t think I have seen that verified yet, just some expectations that it “should” work based on A9.

My EF 24-70 f/2.8L II wants to know

Controlling the camera using an Android smartphone (NFC One-touch remote)

And it lists QR, SSID connection, and with iphone or pad as well

I have a 24-70II and can confirm that eye AF works on the a7rIII in green mode. No need for buggy advanced mode!

This is a good feature (auto switch to slot 2 when slot 1 if full). I know the A9 was missing this (maybe they'll change that with F/W)

"If a memory card in use becomes full or you have forgotten to insert a memory card into a slot, you can record images to the other memory card.
MENU → (Setup) → [Rec. Media Settings] → [Auto Switch Media] → desired setting.

Menu item details On: The camera automatically starts recording on the other memory card when a memory card in use becomes full or if you have forgotten to insert a memory card."

Thanks. Great, there goes one of the main reason to get the 24-70 GM instead. Money saved towards getting the a7rIII!

One thing to consider is that the camera will only track between frames when shooting at 3fps.

But yes for posed portraiture, eye-AF with adapted glass opens a lot more possibilities for me.

It even works with my old drainpipe 80-200 f2.8L in both green and advancedmode, however it is more accurate and works outside the center in advanced mode rather than in green mode. The only problem with the advanced mode is an 1sec lag after you press the button until the camera takes the photo. It does this not only with the “ancient” drainpipe but also with the tamron 15-30 f2.8 which is a relatively new lens. On the contrary my canon 300 f4 non-is (also produced in the 90s) is working fine without a lag. Strange things. Metabones people need to release a new firmware soon.

Yes but I find it to be next to useless as you can't select the focus point form the phone as you can with the A7rII and it doesn't even show you what area you have focused on as you can only see that on the camera. Really awful and one more reason why I am keeping my 2nd A7rII and not upgrading both to the rIII

I may have a bug on my RIII but not sure. Need some advice. When I lightly press the shutter button sometimes the camera takes two or three pictures in a row. Almost like I am on a 2-3 shot burst mode even though I am in single mode. Doesn't happen all the time. When I fully press the shutter button no problem and takes only one picture like it should. Any thoughts? Oh and I am using AF-C. ----Someone just told me they noticed it on their too and just a sensitive shutter button. I will just press more firmly.

Thanks for this very useful info. That's truly terrible functionality. One can only hope this will be adressed and updated.

I agree this is not great, but it does allow you to use the phone as a vibration free remote shutter release when shooting on a tripod eliminating the need for a 2 or 5 second timer.

Can someone see if EF lenses via Metabones work better in low light than they did on the A7r2?

There is substantial improvement, they lock more easily without hunting as much and they can focus accurately outside the centre in advanced mode. However still not even close to native performance.

I was shooting some horses running in a pasture in bright sunlight yesterday. When I was shooting at f/11 in continuous mode, only the first frame was in sharp focus if the horses were running toward me. At f/5.6 and f/8 all of the frames were in focus.

I went home and read the manual and found this note on the top of page 43:

"When the F-value is greater than F8 in [Continuous Shooting: Hi+],
[Continuous Shooting: Hi] or [Continuous Shooting: Mid] mode, the focus is
locked to the setting in the first shot."

Yeah PDAF is limited to f8
